To celebrate Etihad Airways' recently announced title sponsorship of next year's inaugural FORMULA 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the airline has re-painted one of its aircraft in the livery of a racing car.

The new design on the A320 aircraft sees a break from Etihad's corporate colours, with the plane being painted black with the image of a red FORMULA 1 car together with the official race title logo on the rear and the FORMULA 1 logo on the engines.

In the build-up to the 2009 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Etihad will fly the aircraft to several of its destinations across the Middle East and Levant ensuring millions of motor racing fans can see the iconic design and share in the excitement ahead of the UAE's first ever FORMULA 1 Grand Prix.

Peter Baumgartner, Etihad Airways' executive vice president marketing and product said: 'With preparations for the inaugural 2009 FORMULA 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix well underway we are delighted to raise awareness of the race through our own F1-themed aircraft.

Hmmmm....Etihad is also the main sponsor for the Spyker F1 racing team. But their cars are orange-colored. Now, if the plane carries an image of a red F1 car, how did the marketing people coordinate that? Red F1 car is always, of course, a Ferrari.

B747forever,its a good excuse for a trip !! You have to fly on one with the connection to F1 !!!!

Not for much longer. Now that Spyker has been bought and renmed Force India by the owner of Kingfisher Airlines then I expect the Etihad sponsorship will go. However I expect the Etihad sponsorship to go to another F1 team as part of the promotional benefits of the Abu Dhabi GP to come...

Oh yes, I forgot that. Thanks. Emirates is not sponsoring McLaren any more either, right?

This makes no sense to me. F1 has broad appeal around the world but I would say out of Etihad's destinations it has the least appeal in the region served by 320s. Surely a long hauler would have been better for this livery. Then again they are probably super tight for those birds so taking one out of service for a paint job was not an option.

Nice looking airplane. It's a shame it will not be seen in our areas.

I wonder why they painted it black though. Black in the desert is quite crazy and black in general is known for bad luck and misfortune. What other airlines have black airplanes ?

By the way, Kimi Raikkonen IS the best F1 driver there is and WILL win the 2008 WDC.

Cheers

That paint job is freakin bad-ass! I agree it would look better on a long-haul aircraft, but I wonder what paint concers there were on an aircraft that size: Weight? Heat soak? Cost?

F1 probably funded the paintjob and those of you who follow it know how much of a penny-pincher Bernie is (that mop-topped bastard...).

And as it was mentioned, Kimi's the best (though I like Hamilton) and Ferrari will forever be the rulers of Formula One!!!

That a/c looks awsome, but I feel the aircon will be working overtime on that aircraft in that region whilst it wears that black livery. It's bad enough on white aircraft in the UK in summer with no aircon on them, but that thing when it is parked up during the day will be like an oven !!!

Too bad it's not an actual regular livery. Other airlines could learn something from this instead of the euro-white garbage most airlines are coming out with these days!

re: the desert sun on dark fuselages....
Well... Royal Jordanian charcoal black a/c seem to cope ok enough so that they haven't felt a need to change their livery. And Hugh Hefner's black Playboy DC-9 in the '60s/'70s was only hot in other ways.

I'm trying to figure out why Skyliner Photoshopped the foreground of the pic. I think it's the same photo as the Etihad one above it in the thread, just lightened and the foreground changed. Maybe to avoid copyright issues?

I agree with what everyone here has been saying: It looks hot, and will be hot, very hot in the desert sun. I wonder what the skin temp will get too? Does black paint have a shorter lifespan?
