Hi All,
Could anyone advise me as to why United has cancelled its flights from SYD to SFO & LAX over the past few days. (I had my flight cancelled 3 weeks ago) and the problem seems to be going on.

Is something up at United? They've had a ton of cancellations in SAN, too. Is this a system wide thing? A job action? Anyplace we can find cancellation numbers and compare airlines to see if something is out of the ordinary?

I'm not sure if it's poor form to link to a thread on another board, but there has been a thread on the United Airlines forum at flyertalk complaining about delays and cancelations on the SFO/LAX-SYD flights that now has 391 replies over the past four months. Some say its just a result of the aging 744 fleet and (I'm assuming) lack of reserve aircraft.
I have also noticed UA cancelations at SAN but just could have been the particular days I was at the airport.

YOU GOT IT !
The recent SYD cancellations have been due to technical. Our maintenancernbudget has been cut so deeply that there simply aren't personnelrnor parts to maintain the fleet and there certainly are no spare 400s sitting around. But the CEO pocketed about $40 millionrnlast year. Oh and let's not forget about the $250 million they justrnpaid as a dividend to the shareholders (CEO Glenn Tilton is the largestrnsingle shareholder). They had to get that money somewhere....
You could probably buy a great deal of maintenance for $250 million, but what do I know?

3 or 4 years ago we used to sell 300-400 seats on UA over mostly JAN for pax going skiing in USA/Canada ...
not anymore !!!
They seem to be going downhill as far as service quality goes. We used to push Mileage Plus, as 1 return trip to USA/Canada, would usually earn 20000 miles with bonuses which were always around, as pax could get a ff ticket on NZ as far as PER/PPT/PER, alhtough many used to ZQN return, but since UA res when to MNL, very hard to talk to UA.
Now sending heaps on NZ to YVR-LAX-SFO & QF but can't wait for V Australia. They r supposed to be announcing things shortly we heard ?
Who will V Aust use to connect with on west coast? UA ? Not if they are direct competitors ???? Any suggestions?

Let's not forget that the shareholders own the company... and, just because Tilton may be the largest single share holder, he probably is far off largest share holder title...

Only a belligerent moron thinks like this. If Glenn and his boys on Wacker Dr. continue to mismanage the airline to the extent they have - like failing to maintain their planes in a manner that can safely fly the schedule, then the shareholders (me included) will own nothing.
It doesn't take a Wharton education to know that you don't pay a dividend at the expense of the health of your operation. This is a thread about the failings of the SYD operations at UAL. The operations are failing due to lack of maintenance which unfortunately is system wide. Their is a lack of maintenance due to failure of management. Sometimes I take out planes that have a write-up list of 20+ items. It's absurd and it needs to stop.

The shareholder return obsession is a sad reality of todays world. They run everything into the ground to ensure the shareholders are pleased but it is false economy and a short term gain which bring long term pain. QF are heading the same direction. the fleet has been run into the ground! theyh are going to post a billion $$ profit this year yet they won't pay maintenance staff and extra 2%. Meanwhile Dixon and his gang of smithers type goons profit very handsomely. All you have to do is look at the failed APA bid to see Dixons motivation........he should have stood aside.
