Hi everyone,

Some 140 days left till the Soccer Euro'08 starts in Basel and ends tree weeks later in Vienna. I thought it would make sense to open a topic for all the changes in schedule, routings and aircraft.

So for example:

LH flies from MUC to SZG and so serves all Host City's, MUC will be a "EURO-Hub"

AUA announced to serve BSL with F100 instead of CR2

TK applied for 52 flights to BSL during the tree "EURO-Weeks"

Somebody has other News for this event?

Cheers
Chris

They will probably suspend the Schengen Treaty during the EURO '08. So in March they will add Hungary etc. to the Schengen countries and in June they will suspend them again for a few weeks at the Airports.

I live near the Hungarian Border and you can easily clearly see that they plan to reinstate the borders during EURO '08. The Zoll/Douane-Signs, the Road Signs, the Border itself, everything is just temporarily covered up. As far as I know they plan to remove all the Signs etc. after EURO '08.

Any information on flights to KLU, especially LH? What equipment could be expected for possible charters to KLU or even for LH flights of the Nationalmannschaft?

LH flights of the Nationalmannschaft?

As the Germans have their Hotel near Locarno, I suppose that they are flying out of Lugano-Agno with some Turboprop's. MXP would be a longer ride for them.

This is an interesting question. What is the biggest aircraft which can land in LUG (AVRO RJ possible?)? I guess the German team will have between 40 and 50 people: 23 players (this many you can take with you) and a lot of staff. As Locarno is situated in the Sopraceneri (northern part of the Canton Ticino) the the travel time by bus to MXP is probably almost the same as to ZRH.

Austrian Airlines will operate OS 561 VIE-ZRH 07:25-09:00 and OS 562 ZRH-VIE 10:45-12:10 from 08.06.08 till 20.06.08 with B767-300. The equipment for the other flights vary between A321 and Fokker 70.

Distances from google maps:
Locarno - MXP: 130 km - 1h35min
Locarno - ZRH: 230 km - 3h00min

Driving from Locarno to ZRH, the coach will have to pass through the Gotthard tunnel which is a major thread needle or funnel on that transit route through Switzerland. And with EURO '08 in full swing in June, one can expect some even heavier traffic. Having travelled this route last year by car, I am inclined to say, that that drive to ZRH is prone to uncertain travel times.

http://www.lugano-airport.ch/EN/LuganoAirport/News.cfm has picture of a flybaboo Dash8-Q400 at LUG listed as "Inauguration flight" although in their timetable I find nothing else than Sabb 2000's (like Darwin flies to ZRH for LX).

With LUG's fairly short runway and restrictions on approach paths (including special glide scope, IIRC) a/c to operate into LUG are rather restricted. Apart form the S2000 and apparently Q400, only RJ70 or RJ85 come to my mind (or RJ100 with load restrictions ?) as a/c that might operate into LUG with special permission. However I could not find any definite data yet.
Nightly curfews could be lifted for these special flights (arrival after evening games), but then there is always the factor of NIMBYs ...

My personal bet woud be:
Q400 (of Augsburg Airways ?) into/out of LUG.
Second option: Any a/c from MXP.

But: What about LSPM (Ambri) e few miles east of Airolo ? That airfield is listed with a 6529ft/1990m runway and is about 1 hour driving time from Locarno (depending on exact location of the hotel). Would it be likely to operate special flights into there ? But according to their website the aerodrome apparently closes at sunset or at 2000h whatever is earlier ...

I don't think so. Ambri is former military field which is in a mountain valley and difficult for operations. I doubt that they will operate an regional airliner out of there.

I don't think so either; Ambri has no Instrument approach procedures and the TODA Rwy 11 is 1330 meters, Rwy 29 1420 meters, same thing with the landing distances.
So not really an alternative...

I'm getting the point. Thanks for the input.

Maybe old news, but I stumpled across it only today ...:
X3 is adding 11 extra flights from Germany to KLU.
In addition to these extra flights, they are using bigger a/c on their normal flights to KLU.

In german language only: http://www.aero.de/TUIfly_Zusaetzliche_Fluege_zur_Fussball-EM_5417.htm
