Today, the PM Simitis announced that the Athens International Airport at Hellenicon (LGAT, IATA:ATH) will close by February 2002, following the opening of the New Athens Intl by March 2001.

While every major city in Europe searches ways to build additional big and smaller airports or expands the ones that already has, the greek government seeks how to close all the civil airports around Athens in favor of the new one.

After autumn 2002, there will be no civil airports around Athens but there will be four military!!! (Tatoi, Elefsis, Tanagra and Megara).

Hear this too. With the closing of Marathon airport (LGMR) there is no plan of where to move the 100+ private planes and helicopters. LGMR is the only purely general aviation airport in Athens.

I 'd like to share your thoughts with me too...

Will the new airport be ready in time? I read somewhere that the highway to Athens would not be ready in time for the opening of the airport. I might be going to Athens this summer and im looking forward to see the new airport.

That's what many of us thought. But it seems that general aviation and air enthusiasts are nothing for the inexperts, ignorants and state-employed people who decide things like that. If the decision does not change in the near future, general aviation in Athens will be COMPLETELY homeless.
Do you know ANY major city in EC where that happens???
