BREAKING NEWS:

A Japan Airlines Boeing 747 jumbo narrowly avoided a mid-air collision with another airplane on Wednesday, leaving 25 passengers injured, officials said.

I thought it would crash... blood was all over the seats

Flight 907 passenger
Flight 907 - which had 427 people on board - was flying to Naha, on Japan's southern island of Okinawa, late Wednesday afternoon.

Half an hour after leaving Tokyo, as flight attendants were just serving drinks, the plane had to suddenly swerve out of the way of another aircraft.

Some people were thrown into the air

There was pandemonium as the plane went into a steep dive, straightened out and then dived again.

"I thought it would crash," a woman told Japan's NHK television. "Blood was all over the seats."

The BBC's Charles Scanlon in Tokyo says some passengers not wearing seatbelts were thrown onto the ceiling and then back down again.

The aircraft immediately returned to Tokyo's Haneda airport after the incident.

Cuts and bruises

A spokeswoman for the Tokyo Fire Department, Tamae Tsuyuki, said 25 people aboard the plane were injured.

Three people had serious injuries and could not walk by themselves, Japan Airlines spokesman Takeshi Suzuki said.

My friend was thrown into the air and crashed against the ceiling. It was terrible

One passenger was shown on television holding a towel to his head, apparently to stop bleeding.

However, most of those hurt sustained minor injuries, mostly bruises and cuts.

A Transport Ministry official said the other plane was also believed to be a Japan Airlines plane - flight 958 which was on its way to Tokyo's Narita airport from Pusan, in South Korea. That flight also landed safely.

The official said the cause of the accident was under investigation.

Anyone can fly, only the best Soar.
