I thought we could start a list of cities, that at one time, were served by schedualed airline service. Please list only the ones where service ended after deregulation in the USA.

I'll start with my home state of Iowa

Spencer (SPW) Great Lakes Airlines former headquaters. Last service ORD,DEN
Ottumwa (OTM) Great Lakes Airlines Last service ORD

In Ohio, I can think of:

Lima, OH (I know of Trans Midwest Airlines service to TOL, DAY and CMH in the mid 80s)

Galion, OH (Allegheny Commuter to Mansfield, OH)

Mansfield, OH (Allegheny Commuter to Galion, CMH and CLE and later GCS Air Service to CLE)

Burke-Lakefront Airport in CLE was actually the ORIGINAL CLE airport served by Midway Airlines DC-9-10s to Chicago before ML switched over to Hopkins. Prior to that, Wright Airlines and BAS Airlines operated out of BKL to various destinations.

If you look at this page:

www.departedflights.com/79intro.html you will see MANY MANY cities that had air service as late as 1979 that no longer see commercial service.

Airlink provides a mix of one-stop (through TUP) and nonstop service to MEM on S340's. This is an EAS route that would be gone if there were no subsidies.

Where did MSL have it's one-stop to ATL on? What time period?

http://www.departedflights.com/EV060187.html

At least between 1985 and 87 there was nonstop ASA service to ATL and one-stop servie via Gadsden. In 1988, nonstop and one-stops via Gadsden and Anniston.

MKC had ZW service in the 80's. No more. Also in Missouri, IIRC SUS (Spirit of St Louis Airport) had commuter service for awhile but I'm not sure of the time frame.

In Illinois and I may be off on a few of these: Mt. Vernon, Matoon/Charleston, Carbondale, Galesgurg, Sterling/Rock Falls have all lost service since Deregulation. CGX of course, but that's entirely different.

Here's Wisconsin. Nearly all of these were Beech 99, Metro, Banderante or light twin (Cessna, Piper, Beech) service in the post-deregulation world. OSH, JVL and MTW all had 50-seaters.

Sheboygan SBM last served by American Central to ORD
Manitowoc MTW last served by Great Lakes to ORD
Oshkosh OSH last served by Great Lakes to ORD
Fond du Lac FLD last served by Midstate to ORD
Sturgeon Bay SUE last served by Alliance to Chcago
Beloit/Janesville last served by Apex to MKE
Wisconsin Rapids ISW last served by Allied to MKE
Marshfield MFI last served by Allied to MKE
Medford MFZ last served by Allied to MKE
Stevens Point STE last served by Midstate to ORD

Superior SUW last served by Lakland to ORD
Ashland ASX last served by Bemidji to MSP
Hayward HYR last served by Bemidji to MSP

Amery last served by Blue LIne to MKE

There have also been flights to Prairie du Chien (PDC) Waukesha (UES) Lake Geneva, Kenosha (ENW) , Clintonville and Wausau (AUW) at least during the 70's, but I'm not positive any of those were after deregulation.

In Ohio, I can think of:

Also Youngstown, Ohio. Until the 1980s or possibly a bit later, UA operated 727s and 737s to YNG. Not sure whether UA was the only scheduled carrier at YNG. There may have been one or two others.

And Utica, NY. UCA must be the only airport that at one time was the headquarters of a scheduled regional airline, Empire Airlines, that not only no longer has any air service but the airport itself was closed about a year ago. The local airport for that area is now a few miles away at Rome, NY (RME), using a closed USAF base (Griffiss AFB). It has no scheduled service either.

Empire Airlines operated from the mid 1970s until 1986 when it was purchased by Piedmont Airlines, a couple of years before Piedmont merged with US Air. At the time Empire merged with Piedmont, their fleet included about 16 F-28s and half a dozen Metroliners. Their last 2 F-28s on order were delivered to Piedmont after the merger. Shortly before the merger, Empire moved their headquarters from Utica to Syracuse, about 50 miles away, which was their major hub, although they kept their maintenance base at UCA and maintained a few scheduled flights there. UCA's last scheduled carrier was a CO commuter carrier that pulled out in 2002.
