Serbia and Croatia have FINALLY realized that air links between the two states are "necessary".
The CEOs of JU and OU met in ZAG yesterday and agreed that flights between BEG and PUY will be first (as of May 8th) with DBV, SPU and ZAG following suit.
Both claimed that they want presence on the routes, meaning that JU and OU will operate the flights.
My worry is that JU/OU cartel will soon realize the profitability of such services and monopolize the Serbia-Croatia trunk "cash-cows", denying other Croatian airlines right (JU already got rid of Centavia who wanted to fly to ZAG, so no problem there), and thus offering and keeping high fares.

JU's proposed plan after Wednesday's meeting with Croatian Airlines
Jat CEO said that the airline has proposed 2 flights from Belgrade to Pula twice a week starting May 8, 2008. The plane, an ATR72, would depart from Belgrade on Thursday 12.45 and depart from Pula at 15.10. On Sunday’s the aircraft would depart at 8.50 from BEG and start its return from Pula at 11.15. Flights last 90 minutes on this line.
The meetings held in Zagreb were deemed as successful and Jat will continue meeting with Croatian about Jat’s future plans for Croatia such as Belgrade – Dubrovnik – Split and Belgrade – Zagreb flights.

Centavia failed because it did not ask for any licenses. Jat had nothing to do with it. Croatian and Montenegrin government rejected them. Croatia and Serbia still have to sign a free sky agreement so I'm sceptic how the flights mentioned above will start.

Without an air bilateral I can't see these flights seeing the light of day, although for charters I don't think one is needed. Also, both countries have signed the ECAA agreement but not one of them has ratified the agreement and I can't see them doing this anytime soon. Otherwise there would be a wave of competition in each of their home markets, something they aren't too happy to have and compete with their state owned airlines.

That answers that...

Guys, what we need to consider is that OU and JU are exactly those "drivers" that will push through a bilateral agreement. And since they decided to work together, the bilateral is obviously not a worry and will be implemented accordingly.

Great to see air links coming back between Serbia and Croatia. They have been artificially separated for too long now. Hope that they get them up and running soon. Would be nice to get them in time for Belgrade 2008 !!!

Serbia does not seem to break out of a relative aeronautical isolation-it's a pity..
Politics and economics are the lifeline in aviation and as long as the political situation in Belgrade is not stable and the relations with it's neighbours not normalized, things will not improve.
I don't speak in favour of any politician since i'm not faliliar with the current difference between the democats and the more national-minded crowd. But for the sake of an improvment of the economical situation in the country I rather hope for a rapid settlement of the open issues...
