We've seen smaller carriers merge in Europe, but there's way too much politics and national pride to see a major European carrier to merge with another one anytime soon.

exactly.
we´ve gotta keep in mind that europen consists of so many countries whereas the United States is just one country.
i could imagine consolidation between airlines of one and the same country like the merger between iberia and air europa which was called off at the very last second. but i don´t see any major transborder transactions in the near future. just MHO.

I can understand the national pride for your own airline. I just think it is a waste of money and resources to have so many airlines.

it´s not about something like national pride what i´m talking about, i can assure you.
i´m sick of all this national pride, birthplace-patriotism thing.
why is it that it´s such a waste of money and resources?
many airlines with smaller fleets or a few airlines with the combined fleets? of course, there are certainly some duplicated routes and so a few airplanes could be laid off. but there are so many different countries and cultures and the airlines fly their home culture around the world, they bring the country to other countries, it´s somekind of a worldwide representative. i´m sure that the flag carriers will remain but the smaller carriers will somehow experience consolidation.
don´t forget that at the moment consolidation takes place mainly in the usa which is just one country with 5+ major airlines. and all the european countries only have one major carrier.
