"A twin-engine plane has crashed in northwest North Carolina, and federal officials are investigating unconfirmed reports that all six people on board were killed.

Surry County sheriff’s officials said the King Air 90 crashed Friday in a neighborhood near the Mt. Airy airport around 11:30 a.m. ..."

This hits pretty close to home for me as I don't live far from the crash site. RIP to the victims and sincere condolences to their families.  Sad

Interestingly, the flightaware link now leads to an "INVALID" flight.  Sad

What was the WX at the time? I saw a sideline on the linked page indicating an ice storm might be expected.

Looks like it wasn't quite an icestorm at the time, but a very cold rain. The 300 ft broken deck didn't help either I'm sure. With the calm winds reported the best approach seems to be the GPS to 36... with 500-1 mins. One report said it occurred during a missed approach... and going missed looks quite likely with the approach mins compared to those conditions.

Yes, we had an ice storm last night, leaving the trees drooping with ice, but that shouldn't have affected the flight in question. There was a light rain this morning which could have possibly had some freezing rain mixed in, but I still don't see that being a contributing factor.

According to airport-data.com, the owner is Blue Sky Airways out of Georgia.

Yeah, that's very true because there may have been places where it was lower. What's the terrain like around there? Hard to discount the likelihood of CFIT.
