..after Belgrade authorities threatened not to allow the flights to go along..
The Air Berlin partner Flyniki anticipated to fly to Belgrade from Vienna starting march 2008.
It seems in an "effort" to protect JAT,politicians revoked the traffic rights for Flyniki ,who now have cancelled the flights.
If Serbian politicians want to continue the countries relative isolation ,they just should continue to protect an airline that is basically clinically dead..
By refusing competition to fly into Serbia, the dynamics of aviation will inevitably stall on Belgadre...

real shame, the coruption in JAT and the government is disgusting. It really hurts Belgrade not having the competition that neighbouring cities have. I mean Bucharest's aviation is booming! And Belgrade's aviation scene has not had any nice news in years

In theory there is no reason why Serbia would not deserve more direct flights, wouldn't it be for stupid political reasons.
The country has not yet managed to fully implement democratic rules in the economic sector and will suffer as long as unilateral protections are maintained.
I bet many Serbian companies who would appreciate an opening and relaxation of visa-rules would be the first ones to jump on the train of change...

Really? I haven't seen any reports in the local press. Any links?
Serbian media will be all over this one if true, JU's final "kicks"... what goes around...

The news was found on a special "Air Berlin" Forum in Germany, where company insiders discuss news related to new air-route openings and other interna of Air Berlin or Flyniki.
The destination Belgrade has disappeared from the bookings-masks of Flyniki anyhow...
sorry-can't change the title-the edit botton is gone..

Serbia has signed the Open Skies and is due to implement it until the end of this year, if I'm not mistaken. Therefore, whatever restrictions the Govt imposes now will not be valid forever.
Seeing there was interest from FlyNiki (and another carrier from Germany) to start services to BEG, seems to imply there is increased demand. I feel we're in for much more interesting spotting at BEG - if not this year, then the next.

Increasing? Its increased already!
I barely managed to get on an LH flight from BEG to FRA in December. What was supposed to have been a 733 flight ended being upgraded to an AB6, both ways, completely full.

Unfortunately, Mr. Tadić is pushing this country into transparent isolation. Preventing own citizens to travel for a reasonable fare, while giving them illusions of freedom is very dangerous, yet already seen game.

You mean Mr Kostunica?
Anyway, according to B92, JU and OS are the reason why Flyniki was denied landing rights in BEG.
According to his idiotic majesty, V. Ilic, these two carriers are the ones who should agree for Flyniki to enter the market, but until they do, Serbia will only grant rights for VIE-INI sectors.
Niki Lauda is quite angry about the whole situation and says he will not give up until he sees his planes in BEG.
Quoting Pe@rson (Reply 14): Anyone know what the top 5 O&D markets in terms of pax numbers from BEG are?
Hi James! I haven't seen you in quite some time
Well, my guess is ZRH, MUC, FRA, VIE, MXP, but I would love to see something official. I guess SVO, LHR, CDG are doing well too. DXB has high load factors, but there is a problem with equipment there. JAT is one of the rare European carriers to use 737 on that route and EK is still not flying here

Quoting Pe@rson (Reply 16): Surely those would be more based on connections? Or do you reckon there are pretty large Serbian populations in those cities?
In fact, both. Germany and Austria have large Serbian population. Even at the time when there were long-haul flights from Belgrade in 1980s and 1990s, flights to Germany and Austria were quite full. There is also a a lot of passengers connecting to long-haul flights from there. MXP is doing well in attracting transfer passengers and they often have good deals.

ZRH i s No.1, thereafter, in no particular order: VIE, FRA, MUC, CDG, LHR, SVO.

Right destination with a wrong aircraft and terrible timetable. DXB is a good performing route but JU simply don't care to "nurture" it. We'll have to wait for EK - one day

As a poster on the Air Berlin forum indicates, the trafic-rights for Flyniki between Belgrade and Berlin have been revoked-so there will be defenitely not be any flights any time soon on Flyniki to Serbia...
