Good God...when will it end? This has been one of the worst weather winters in Chicago in some time. Thundersnow is only the exclamation point after nearly a foot of the white stuff earlier in the week. What's next, tornados? Oh yeah, they had some of those in Kenosha just four weeks ago.

I'd take flightaware with a grain of salt--he was probably holding overhead in the PPO area trying to get into MDW and then diverted back to DTW...

Flightaware doesn't tend to handle diversions uniformly...

SWA36 is indeed diverting to CMH, but flightaware shows him doing do from the ORD206022 (ORD 206 radial at 22 miles), and if there was a VOR or small airport near that point-in-space, flightaware would have likely shown that, leading one to believe the flight had operated from that airport to CMH.

SWA2188 shows diverting to IIU, which is the VOR for Louisville, and the flight is obviously going to SDF.

A PDX-MDW flight went into OMA, and I'm sure MCI, STL and others will get some.

There is no way a mainline airliner diverted to PPO, period.

That's 8" snow on ground. The 2 would be the new snow, the 8 would be the total on the ground. That snow on ground counts snow from prior snowfalls... namely the past week.

True... From FMH-1...

y. Snow Increasing Rapidly (SNINCR_[inches-hour/inches on ground]). At designated stations, the
snow increasing rapidly remark shall be reported, in the next METAR, whenever the snow depth
increases by 1 inch or more in the past hour. The remark shall be coded in the format, SNINCR
[inches-hour/inches on ground], where SNINCR is the remark indicator, inches-hour is the depth
increase in the past hour, and inches on ground is the total depth of snow on the ground at the time
of the report. The depth increase in the past hour and the total depth on the ground are separated from
each other by a solidus "/". For example, a snow depth increase of 2 inches in the past hour with a
total depth on the ground of 10 inches would be coded "SNINCR 2/10".

Yep, RVR is runway visual range, measured in feet.

The ILSes to 13C and 04R each require 4000, and the ILS to 31C requires either 4000 (ILS) or 3000 (ILS-Z). There is no instrument approach on 22L.
