Although I already posted this in the Swiss Aviation Thread I think it deserves an own thread:
This is really a surprise: SWISS takes over the airline Edelweiss from Kuoni. This means three A 320 and an A 332. Is this probably a first step to a low cost subsidiary and not only charter as EDW was till now? I only hope they keep the brand and the cool livery, as they promise.

There was the rumor that the new 333 from SWISS will have RR Trent engines. Now they already get the first aircraft with RR engines.

“Edelweiss Air will remain Edelweiss Air – with its new sister SWISS, too,” adds Harry Hohmeister, Chief Network & Distribution Officer at SWISS.

Edelweiss Air is very popular in Switzerland, so Swiss must stay with this name. I will see more A320 for Edelweiss (now the Charter division of LX).

Go Edelswiss.... ooohmmmm Edelweiss!

He all!

Nice to read that! It reminds me of the nice old SWISSAIR-BALAIR times!
Now we see a similar development again! Lovely!

Thats an absolute boost, for both, SWISS and EDELWEISS, as for Swiss aviation in general!  bouncy

Regards and a nice weekend to all of you!

Patrick

Please don't say that. They never made any money then with the charters and I'm rather worried history mights just repeat itself here. Although the whole point doesn't really seem to be to make money but rather to prevent anybody else from laying hands on Edelweiss.

Might be true, but I see it more from the enthuisiastic site and not from the economic point of view.
With this step LX buildts up an own block against the AirBerlin/Belair merger.

Lets see if this time, thinks will work better. (economy wise)

Patrick

Wow!  worried Didnt know about this merger, it does indeed deserve a own thread. I really hope they don't change the livery on "my" beloved Brahmjee. She looks incredible and i enjoyed the flights on her everytime.

Apart makes that sense for LX to have one A330 with RR the rest PW?

When the new 333s come in 2009 they will be RR powered.

This is good news for both parties, aswell as for LH, who will now get an even stronger footprint in Swiss aviation.

Also a good deal for edelweiss with AB as a huge competetor at ZRH Edelweiss was in the need to get into a strongger position. I see this deal as a good one for both sides.
We will see how long the Brand Edelweiss will continue to exist or if they will just be merged into Swiss.

I think the Edelweiss brand is very strong here in Switzerland - but only for the leisure market. So we will have Edelweiss also in the future.

Any ideas if EDW on one side and the merged 4U/X3/EW on the other side might be brought in line to some degree ?

The same said the SWISS speaker at the noon news (Mittagstagesschau) on TV SF1.

They also say that it will be possible to book single seats on the SWISS page. It could very well be that EDW becomes a kind of LCC for SWISS and not only a leisure airline. Although the service standards on EDW are much better than on many so called legacy carriers. You get free food on short-haul leisure flights (in comparison to for example IB scheduled flights).

This was huge news in class this morning, and we somehow agreed that it would be cool if the pilot groups would be merged, as flying a mix of scheduled service and charter would be very interesting.

Very refreshing news!

The Edelweiss Air brand should remain however I would assume that somewhere on the AIrcraft we would also see a LX logo maybe also if it will be very small I gues somewhere we might get too see it.
