Although I already posted this in the Swiss Aviation Thread I think it deserves an own thread:
This is really a surprise: SWISS takes over the airline Edelweiss from Kuoni. This means three A 320 and an A 332. Is this probably a first step to a low cost subsidiary and not only charter as EDW was till now? I only hope they keep the brand and the cool livery, as they promise. http://www.swiss.com/web/EN/about_sw...0208.aspx?1202453699537&Country=CH

Quoting Glidepath73 (Reply 3): Nice to read that! It reminds me of the nice old SWISSAIR-BALAIR times!
Now we see a similar development again! Lovely!
Please don't say that. They never made any money then with the charters and I'm rather worried history mights just repeat itself here. Although the whole point doesn't really seem to be to make money but rather to prevent anybody else from laying hands on Edelweiss.

Might be true, but I see it more from the enthuisiastic site and not from the economic point of view.
With this step LX buildts up an own block against the AirBerlin/Belair merger.
Lets see if this time, thinks will work better. (economy wise)

Also a good deal for edelweiss with AB as a huge competetor at ZRH Edelweiss was in the need to get into a strongger position. I see this deal as a good one for both sides.
We will see how long the Brand Edelweiss will continue to exist or if they will just be merged into Swiss.

Quoting Viasa (Reply 12): I think the Edelweiss brand is very strong here in Switzerland
The same said the SWISS speaker at the noon news (Mittagstagesschau) on TV SF1.
Quoting Viasa (Reply 12): but only for the leisure market. So we will have Edelweiss also in the future.
They also say that it will be possible to book single seats on the SWISS page. It could very well be that EDW becomes a kind of LCC for SWISS and not only a leisure airline. Although the service standards on EDW are much better than on many so called legacy carriers. You get free food on short-haul leisure flights (in comparison to for example IB scheduled flights).
