United's New Luggage Policy. Need Info.

I realize there is a thread about this topic already. I followed it for a while. I don't want to start another debate to the merits of this policy but I do have a question I couldn't find in the thread.

My organization sponsors foreign students in the USA. Many flew to the US this summer on LH and continued on UA to various destinations. At the time the second piece of checked luggage was "free". They all have return tickets with the old luggage rules. Do they now have to pay for the second piece? Trust me they will all have two pieces of luggage, they're students........

Any UA people who can provide accurate info?

Again, don't want to start a debate whether this is good or bad, etc. Just need to know what to tell our clients. Thanks in advance.

Tickets issued before 2/4/08, OR any tickets for travel before 5/5/08 fall under the old policy.

Tickets issued on or after 2/4/08 for travel on or after 5/5/08 fall under the new.

If they already have return tickets issued, they fall under old rules.

Assuming that they are on international tickets with domestic connections (no seperate ticket or reservation for the domestic flights), they'll be fine. The domestic segments will then count as part of an international journey and give them 2 pieces 50lbs each in free allowance. Some check in agents might not understand that right away and a supervisor might be needed, but in the end they will be fine with two bags.

Unfortunately most were issued two tickets because they had a three day stop-over in NYC before they continued their domestic flights. So most were issued Germany-NYC-Germany tickets on LH and then a UA domestic segment returning via ORD, IAD, JFK, DEN on LH.

Ugggh, very complicated........we've already had a staff meeting and decided before we say "yes" or "no" and get tons of complaints when we're wrong, we'll inform them to expect to pay for the second bag but show the check-in agent the LH ticket and ask if they can have the fee waived. In the end we'll be the ones who get blamed anyway.

Most tickets were issued in August 08 and most are scheduled to return after 5/5/08 so hope all UA agents cooperate.

It's only $25.00. With the strength of the Euro these days against the dollar, they won't even blink. If they have the money to come to the states and likely shop like crazy, then they have the money for a measly baggage fee.

They're students attending college and have shelled out a lot of money (well actually they're parents most likely did) for tuition so I know they're not over there "shopping like crazy". Yes, it's only "measly" $25 but that wasn´t my point. I just wanted to know what to let them know before they go to the airport and have to pay a charge they didn't know about. Also, a little bit of covering our butts to avoid being blamed for not "doing something" is also a motive.

p.s. if you think $25 is "measly" please let me know where you live. Then if any of our students are near you I can have them contact you about covering the 25 bucks for them.........

There shouldn't be any issue as long as the tickets were issued before February. If your truly worried you can always call up UAL and have them put a note in the PNRs that there is an international segment.

Since the tickets were already booked before the cutoff date, they won't count in the new policy. They'll be fine.

Fact of the matter is, to cover your bases I would call UAL reservations and have them document your groups PNR's that you made the effort to call and verify. Just to be honest i think the group would respect the advise of a UAL employee over the advise of the airliners.net forum users. After all, I'm not going to pay the extra fees for them...... Smile

Call United with their PNR's and ask them to put a note in there. Its not like we are unable to see when the E-Tickets were issued, but if they can put it right at the top, surrounded by stars, it would make your students trip a lot easier.

Also, have your students bring their "Trip Summary/Receipt" because it says when the E-TKT was issued right on the page.

With that said, even if they just brought the Receipt, they shouldn't have any problems.
