Which US city with at least 1m people in its metro area has on average the highest domestic O&D fares? I'd guess CVG, but don't know for certain.

I'd say either CVG or MEM one of which will be gone in a few months  Wink. Maybe MSP?

From a September 19, 2007 USA Today article about DL lowering some fares at CVG:

Quote:
The announcement came after two separate surveys released this summer by the Department of Transportation tagged the local airport - where Delta has more than 80% of the market - with the dubious distinction of having the nation's highest fares.

Here is some fare data for CVG that I posted in another thread. Let's Talk MEM And CVG (by AAce24 Jan 22 2008 in Civil Aviation)

It came from the DOT's Consumer Airfare Report for 2Q 2007. (Table 6)

I just divided the length in miles by the avg. fare to get the avg. fare per mile in each of the below city-pairs out of CVG.

I would have to say the Greensboro Triad area before Skybus. That metro has 1+ million, correct?

Yes. 1.5+ million in the Greensboro/Winston-Salem/High Point metro area proper now. (includes about 8 counties)

Also, FWIW, I remember an article not long ago that listed the top 20 cities that had the highest fares. I seem to remember Cincinnati, Memphis, Greensboro, Des Moines, Allentown, Charlotte, Knoxville and Toledo all being on that list.

Here's my homeade list from the DOT data for 3Q2007. Fares below $35 were considered non-revenue and discounted from fare calculations. I don't know the exact metro pops, so I used a 250K pax requirement for the quarter. (or 1 million plus annual pax) Some of them are obviously not 1M+ metros, but have significant traffic, nonetheless.

I flew DAL-DEN with one-stop service around the Christmas holiday on WN for $139 r/t! Yeah for DAL! You notice that lots of cities that are served by WN are very low on the list.

Ok, so CVG is the 2nd most expensive for O&D fare.

How about MDT?!! Ouch!! I wonder why that is...  scratchchin

So much for getting rid of cvg and mem after the big merger, then of course where does the cost savings kick in? They can keep gouging customers in those two markets.

I'd say either CVG or MEM one of which will be gone in a few months . Maybe MSP?

It's for this exact same reason why I think these two markets will stay. Not at its current size but I do believe DL/NW will continue to protect it's two little gold mines.
