HA Planes 580-582

Are HA planes 580-582 the ones leased brand new but with the classical 767 interiors as opposed to the new 777-style interiors? How do you tell these planes apart from the ex-LTU planes other than the leather seats?

When HA phases out 767s, which planes will go first? Will the 4-ex DL planes be the last ones to go, as HA purchased them and that they had just been extensively updated?

580-582 were leased brand new from Boeing. I believe they were intended for Ansett. They do have the "classic" interior (bins/sidewallls). They have the purple cloth seats, not leather. The LTU aircraft had leather seats but were "renovated" and now have cloth slimline seats.

HA purchased these last year however. From the outside you can spot them as they are the only aircraft in HA's fleet (other than ex LTU a/c 583) with 4 exit Doors on each side vs 2 doors/2 windows (587-598) and 3 doors/1 window (584-586).

I can deduct that most likely the 4 ex-DL birds and ships 580 to 582 will be the last to go as they are now owned outright by HA. Looking at my 2006 annual report, the purchase of ships 580-582 was part of a lease resturcturing deal with AWAS announced and finalized in late 2006. The end result was the purchase of 580-582 and the shortening of the leases of the remaining 3 AWAS owned planes. It is most likely that these 3 ships will be the first to go.

Just speculating, but in the recent HA A332/A358 order announcements, the company indicated that it could lease additional A332s as early as 2009 for growth and replacement so it is possible that the leases for the 3 remaining AWAS owned planes will have their leases due between 2009 and 2012 (when the first new A332 arrives) followed by either the ex-LTU ships or the remaining of the 587-593 batch which are the best of HA's 767 fleet (2 door/2 window exits, highest passenger capacity, large cargo door, 777 interior).

Is there a reason why HA chose not to purchase any of the planes 587-593 but instead chose to purchase 580-582? To me it seemed more logical to purchase planes in 587-593 batch, as they have higher seating capacity and larger cargo doors and better yield?

With 787s coming onto the market, wouldn't the price of B767 drop? Wouldn't it be cheaper to continue the lease on the 767s than to lease A330-200s (or in the same thought process, cheaper to purchase additional 767s)? It is expensive to operate a mixed fleet and to certify employees for A300-320?

It will be so sad to see the 767's go, I'll need to fly HA again before that happens. Still kind of wondering why HA didn't go for the 787 instead, as they wouldn't operating a "mixed" fleet of A330's and A350's.

My wife and I flew a brand new 767 (or so the flight attendants said) with the new interior on our honeymoon back in 2003, loved it. Does anyone know if that was a purchased or leased plane?

In 2003 they were all leased. In 2006 the 4 Delta aircraft and 580-582 were purchased. If it had the new interior in 2003 it had to be 587-593 which would have been "new" at the time.

If i'm not mistaken, the rest of the planes in the 587-593 batch were from another lessor (Boeing Capital?) and at the time of the purchase of 580-582, the only challenges were with AWAS. Someone else will have to correct me if I am wrong on this though as I am not entirely sure.
