Does anyone have any idea if airlines set their prices lower into certain airports to offset the price of car rentals, especially if a state has an exorbitant tax for such rentals?

Recently, I found that flying into Pittsburgh was $160 round-trip from FLL - as opposed to $250 into CLE. The mileage and the gas prices basically make this a wash, so the difference in airfare doesn't really matter.

I've noticed that places such as MCI and STL have extremely reasonable airfare over cities such as ICT or OMA, but the state of Missouri seems to have a large tax on rental cars.

Just curious if lower airfares are synonymous with higher rental fees...any help is appreciated.

I've worked pricing at two major US airlines and I don't recall ever taking car rental prices into the equation, but I'd bet the car rental places might just as well - it's all supply and demand!
