Is it unusual that NW operates an A330-200 AMS-DTW? I didn't think they did much -200 out of DTW?

Yesterday we were on NW53 and it had been scheduled to be a -300 but when we got to the gate I saw a -200 there waiting to take us back home.

Date: Thursday, February 14 Flight: NW 53
Departs: Amsterdam-Schiphol, Netherlands (AMS) at 3:40PM
Arrives: Detroit-Wayne County Int'l, MI (DTW) at 6:40PM
Class of Service: World Business Class (D) Seat: 01-A Window, 01-B Aisle
Flight Duration: 9 hours Approximate Miles: 3,920
Meal Service: Dinner Aircraft: Airbus A330-200
Note: Flight Status posted day before departure

Do you know if the flight was full or not? That may have had something to do with it. Today's Flight 53 is a A330-300. Probably just an aircraft swap.

C was very light, and Y looked to be about 50% full.

There is your answer! I bet there was another flight that was nearly full or oversold that needed the extra seats.

I guess AMS-SEA is a really popular route!
