The USPTO is showing the Southern Airlines trademark newly registered to someone in Southaven, MS (A suburb of MEM). Any clues/rumors/anything?!?!?!

So let's see...

The airlines merge because they claim there's too much capacity for viability...then they'll allow a new airline to start up to add more capacity.

Yah...that's the ticket.

I'm guessing it's a long, long way from registering a name to leasing a plane or two, let alone filling those planes with paying passengers. For all we know at this point, "Southern Airlines" may have been registered to a guy with one very small Cessna and one very big dream.

On the other hand competition is always good (at least for whoever is winning said competition), so I'll be very interested to see if another player in the airline game is emerging.

Might Southern Air (the 747 cargo operator) object to the name as being rather similar to their own?

Well, call 'em up and ask directly. That might tell a lot but who knows what they may tell you.

Quoting Hawaiian717 (Reply 5):

If Southern Airlines is a cargo outfit, maybe, possibly. If it's anything else, (LCC, pax charter, crop dusting...), I don't think they'd care, it's not likely Southern Air customers would be aware of Southern Airlines' and vice versa.

A lot of FedEx Feeder aircraft (The smaller ones - like a one man Caravan C-208 operation) incorporate themselves and or their business for legal reasons. This may be something of the sort.

The closest airport to Southaven is Olive branch or Mem. The area code is wrong it should be 662- Im not familiar with them and im 8 miles away. It could be On small cargo plane registered under that name.

But That gulfstream that the cia had was registered 4 miles north of here in Cordova a Memphis sub. IT was just an empty place

i can see for 80 miles

Obtaining a business license/incorporation and registering a trademark are not necessarily hand-in-hand, especially for said smaller companies.

The spirit of free enterprise suggests that you should let them get on with it and if they fall on their backsides then it's their loss but new startups should never be suppressed.

The suppression of new entrants into the markey is what in effect has happened in US and UK politics where you've ended up with a couple of nearly identical, bloated "legacy" parties - with no LCCs!

While your point is still valid, it is Southern Airlines, not Airways.
