It's been reported (sorry, can't post link) that LY will buy three "new" 737-800s from an unnamed Spanish airline (Air Europe? Futura?) for delivery in 2009 and these aircraft will replace five 757s currently operated by SV.

Great news; so, the 738s will be new.
So, LY will have 13 737s in its fleet in 2009

Hang on a sec... SV operate flights for LY?? Isn't this a political problem?

I think he meant LY instead of SV

So those planes are aimed for some spanish airline but they don't want them?

I would say they come from Air Europa.

Some of these future 738s are supposed to replace the 6 757s currently left in El Al's fleet.

But the 757 is a larger airplane: El Al's 738s have 142 seats, while their 757s have 178. Isn't there something weird?

I bitterly miss the livery that should never have been changed (repetition...)

LY can comnpensate routes with more demand by sending B767's and routes with less demand B737's. Some routes that used to be B752 destinations have received or more frequency with B737's or an upgrade to larger equipment. For instance CDG used to see a lot of B752's soon it will mainly get long haul equipment and some B737's. It looks like LY can do well without having this niche capacity between the B737s and the B767's

I think EL AL will purchase new/used a/c in the comming years instead of buying direct from boeing. LY would still be getting new a/c but at a discount price and they would save on the cost of a ferry flight from SEA-TLV. However I expect them to buy new widebodies direct unless they can find some like this.
