Today has been officially inaugurated the high speed train between Madrid and Barcelona (http://www.elmundo.es/albumes/2008/02/20/ave/index.html, in Spanish). Several journalists are comparing the timings between both cities both by train and plane going from Madrid/Barcelona to Barcelona/Madrid and back (http://www.expansion.com/edicion/exp/empresas/es/desarrollo/1091500.html, in Spanish) and I will suppose that in a few hours we will have a full report on the differences between both types of travel. We will have to wait some time to see if there is any impact of the train with the plane (50 min vs. 2h and a half, plus the time to go into and out of the stations and the airports, of course).

Well, they main difference will be the use of your time.

For the air shuttle You have to get to the airport and:
1 queue for check-in
2 queue for security
3 wait for boarding unless you're lucky enough to check-in for a flight departing in 20 minutes
4 board and get to your seat and fasten your seatbelt
5 taxi and take off
6 50 minutes of flight time
7 land and exit

For the train you have to get to the station and:
1 queue for security
2 get on the train and go to your seat
3 2:40-3:30 of journey time (depends on intermediate stops)
4 exit the train.

While travelling, by air you can only get to use a laptop during steps 3 and 6. You may use your phone while boarding and inside the aircraft until the doors are close. On the other hand, by train you spend most of the time "doing the same": sitting. And you can use your laptop and phone (and it's doable) during most of the time involved.

Also price is important. Train may take alittle longer but it's cheaper.
