New Plans For NYC Airport

Has anyone heard of any new plans for a new airport in the NYC area, so that one of the 3 (LAGUARDIA!!!) could be shut down permanently? I am a transportation and logistics manager at Ohio State, and we have been studying a new survey about possible sites for a new airport in the NYC area. One site is Northern New Jersey, another is Eastern Long Island (too far in my opinion) and another is around the Sandy Hook area of New Jersey. We only briefly touched on this in class, I was wondering if anyone else had more details?

Sandy Hook is inaccesable from NY. Plus it's too close to VOR 31L 31R approaches at JFK. The begining of the approach is Kings Point which is at the tip of Sandy Hook. The approach takes you over Canarsie which was one of the airports that lost out to the airspace overcrowding some 20 years ago. Now it's just a Police helicopter base.

The Eastern LI site you are talking about, I believe, is Calverton the old navy base. It's an environmentally sensitive area with with plane hating granola eating folks who won't let it happen.

Calverton is a good 2-3 hour drive from NY with the daily traffic.

There's no realestate or airspace to build a new airport in the NY area. We already have FRG, HPN, EWR, JFK, LGA, and Teterboro all with converging airspace. It's the most complex and congested airspace in the country and you want to add another airport?

If anything LGA should be closed. JFK could be further developed The existing land mass can be built out into the Jamaica bay with landfill where additional runways can be built. No one lives out there. However it is a protected bird estuary. But birds can be poisoned.

The assumptions about Calverton are correct. There was a plan to convert Calverton to a major air freight facility, but most of the buildings have been leased out to technology companies, and the field's future as an airport is in doubt.

FRG is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the country. I should know as I fly from there--it's not uncommon to have LGA- like waits at the departure end of a runway on a clear weekend day. The locals are not going to allow any airline service there (they are already working to defeat runway/taxiway realignment).

The only logical choice would be a buildup at ISP. There is a major terminal for LIRR adjacent to the north end of the field, and rumor has it Southworst is building its own terminal near the railroad station. ISP's main runway is the same length as LGA's runways, and I do believe that some buildup would be acceptable--the tree huggers don't have the clout at ISP they have at FRG or CCC.

Hey Bucks918, I am also a student at OSU. I would like to learn more about the transportation major at OSU and how I could benefit and tie it in with my aviation major. Sorry it's off the subject.
