The problem is that there are not exactly many scheduled flights to either
SPU or DBV and particularly not on week-days.
Have you checked using Germanwings or SkyEurope for the leg to/from Croatia? Sample flights for the return leg:
SPU- VIE 29 EUR on Jun 17
DBV- VIE 76 EUR on Jun 18
SPU- PRG 55 EUR on Jun 17
DBV- PRG 56 EUR on Jun 18
SPU- BTS 35 EUR on Jun 17
DBV- BTS 36 EUR on Jun 17

Thanks for these.
I can leave Dubrovnik meaning then Id fly into Split but none of these flights from VIE or PRG operate (or operate once-twice a week) or if they do there is no way to get there from Nice to connect.
Does anyone have any more suggestions.
I am thinking using Clickair form Dubrovnik to BCN and then Vueling from BCN to NCE.
Anyway to get from NCE to SPLIT?

the cheapest option is indeed with

SPU to NCE in 2002. There were no LCC in Croatia at that time, so I went the boat-train-train route. Take a train to Milan, then to Ancona and then the fast ferry to Split. It was less than 100 euros one way back then.
