Delta will need to cancel all the flights between ATL/DKR/ATL and JNB/DKR/JNB between 06 Mar - 17 Mar because the Senegalese government booked up all the hotel rooms in Daker for an Islamic conference. Delta will not have any place to put up their crews.

Delta will be flying ATL/SID/JNB/SID/ATL instead as DL0238/DL0239.

Will anyone here on a.net be able to take some pictures of Delta stopping over in SID?? Will pax able to get off the plane as SA did ??!?!?!

Is there any airline needs to cancel their DKR opt during that time ?!

That's just crazy - I wonder, does Delta receive any compensation for this, as I'm sure it's lost revenue, isn't it?

Just another reason DL should think about getting a 772LR on the ATL-JNB route sooner than later. If DKR makes them money, then the Senegal government just took a bunch out of their pockets.

I imagine SA's flights to JFK and IAD will be affected as well?

SA did not allow pax to get off the plane at SID...at least not in 2002, when I flew JNB-SID-JFK. Wish they had...would have been nice to stretch my legs!

I've gotten off the plane in SID several times. My favorite experience was 2 744's full of people packed into SID's tiny terminal in the middle of the night. Actually it wasn't so bad, a bunch of us stood outside in the warm air and it was quite pleasant...really didn't want to get back on the plane! But there were in fact other times we did not get off the plane. It would be neat to see the airport at SID again, as I haven't in several years now.

Interesting. I had hoped to be able to get off and look around...if nothing else, to say I'd been there! Don't know if it was just the particular crew, or post-9/11 paranoia, but they made us stay on and hold our carry-on luggage on our laps while they did a security sweep. Not very pleasant in the middle of the night.

Does this mean that DL did not make advance reservations or that the governmetn took away those reservations and gave them up for the Islamic conference?

I've heard of a similar problem when Pakistan hosted the last OIC meeting in May 2007. The government comandeered all the hotels in Islamabad and even those with reservations had to find something else.

I don't know what the BA crews did. They're probably the only ones to overnight in Islamabad.

Yeah I've had to do that too...I think it might be the post-9/11 atmosphere since that happened to me after 9/11 but not before...I have to facts to back up that it was 9/11 that caused that, however.

Cape Verde is a neat place. You should check it out, past the SID airport  Wink

I flew in 2005 and pax going thru to JNB or ATL did not get off. If you were going to SID you could. But I think only 3 people did

There can only be so much room at the Hilton, Sheraton, Sofitel or whatever 4 and 5 star acomodations there are in Dakar.

I'm sure there's plenty of room at the hotel we stayed in down the road in Yoff Smile...probably not up to flight crew standards though.

Who would they get the compensation from, the Sengalese government?

They did in earlier years when most SA flights to/from Europe and the USA stopped at SID since they were prohibited from overflying most countries in Africa. I recall getting off an SA 747-200 at SID in both directions en route JFK-JNB and back in the late 1970s. You could stay on board if you wished as it was the middle of the night.

It's surprising DL wouldn't have had a long term contract for crew rooms at whatever hotel they use. But in parts of Africa, contracts are probably fairly meaningless.

Seem like SA, AF, and AZ will still fly in and out DKR during that time. Where are they going to put the crews ?

Stepping into my armchair route-planner chair, given the parameters described above, I'd make the flight go through ACC or LOS where they already have facility arrangements and maybe pick up some traffic sense from the existing operations.

As I understand the planning of the route, former Atlanta mayor Andrew Young personally campaigned for the ATL-JNB route to stop in western Africa AND to have full traffic rights between both Atlanta and South Africa. The original plan was ATL-ACC-JNB, but Ghanaian officials would not permit full traffic rights, so DKR was substituted instead.

SID has the facilites already in place, so the switch should not be a tremendous problem. I'd be curious to know exactly what percent of traffic has a final destination of DKR - I don't imagine it's a tremendously large number. However, I didn't know that there were any crews based in Senegal - but that's why I joined this forum!!

Would love to! When SAA was still flying nonstop to/from JFK, it crossed my mind to plan a trip there, but unfortunately it's a lot harder to get there now. I guess TACV flies from BOS sometimes.
