According to The Commercial Appeal, a contractor accidently cut a phone line in the control tower's basement, severing communications with Memphis Center (in a facility located elsewhere on airport property).
All departures were stopped from 4-5pm, but delays seemed to be continuing after 6. FX dayside (postal) operations appeared to be impacted.

MEM seems to have bad luck with this sort of thing. At least they fixed it quickly this time. I bet there's nothing like expecting a handoff and not getting it.
