And why do they do it for just a short time? do they expecting high loads or do they need to position the 744 somehoe to SFO and back to ORD? Damn that ORD and SFO are so far away from me to just hop on it  Wink

Just a guess, but that period (3/30 to 4/20) does include many school vacations in the US. Not sure if that would increase SFO-ORD demand though. Sadly, colleges, unfortunately including mine, tend to have vacation earlier in March.  Sad

That'd be my guess. The 744's pop up every now and then, but this is actually the longest length of scheduled service I have seen them on in a while.

My B-day is April 8th so I just looked up United.com and if I fly ORD to SFO flight 831 (676-300) then return on April 9th on flight 54 (747-400), the round trip cost is only $240.00!!!! It would be my first widebody flights ever and I would get two widebody aircraft out of the way!! What a great birthday present to me!!!! Now i just gotta find a cheap flight from MCI to ORD before flight 831 leaves!!!!

It doesn't get a lot better than that!

The UA 744 gets a lot of grief it seems nowadays but let me tell you, there's NOTHING like catching a ride on the Jumbo.

The 744s appear on repositioning flights between hubs from time to time. It often depends on what equipment is available and what is scheduled for maintenance checks or the new F and C seats. It is unusual to see them scheduled on a domestic route for three weeks. UA used to use them during peak season on certain domestic routes but they stopped a couple of years ago and now they only make irregular appearances.

Well looks like the first flight United has from MCI to ORD on the 8th is flight 7658 which leaves at 0600 and arrives at 0721 hours. That wont work. I dont really wanna have to arrive the night before and rent a hotel for the evening!!

Of course Chicago is only an 7 to 8 hour drive from Kansas City..........  hyper

Don't quite understand your problem. It is probably cheaper for you to buy a MCI-SFO ticket and route it through ORD.

On the outbound date you gave I see this as a connection:

UA 682
MCI 04/08/08 10:50 AM
ORD 04/08/08 12:21 PM 733

UA 149
ORD 04/08/08 3:05 PM
SFO 04/08/08 5:29 PM 744

And returning the following morning

UA 54
SFO 04/09/08 6:15 AM
ORD 04/09/08 12:19 PM 744

UA 5382
ORD 04/09/08 3:05 PM
MCI 04/09/08 4:36 PM CR7

The above itinerary prices out at 365USD all in right now. You could always route the return SFO-DEN-MCI and get either 777 or 767 on the SFO-DEN (or both if SFO-DEN-ORD-MCI).

Well if its in the new config, good luck as there will be significantly less J seats. UA want you to pay for these seats and eliminate all the upgrades. Saying that, if your to have a chance I guess flying domestically on one of the new layouts would argueably be the best best as opposed to international. Good luck anyway.

just did a little messing around, i would be leaving from CLE.

could fly to ORD on an A320, not a bad flight in itself, take the 744 to SFO.

then catch a 777 to IAD and then back to CLE on a Regional Jet...unfortunately, they want $800 for this routing.

Now of course not! The A913 has higher payloads whereas the 676-300 has longer range. Also I prefer the seat pitch of the 673.  Smile

The 747 will be the newly reconfigured international premium product airlplane. this will be the first 747. it will continue on to FRA. It will leave Korea on the 13th or the 15th of this month. Then on the 25th of this month in SFO it will undergo a FAA evacuation to recertify the upper deck with only 1 door. The new lay flat beds on the upper deck on the right side extend into the door area. The upper deck will have 20 beds. The seating will be as follows 12 First, 52 Business and 310 in Coach. The next 2 747's will be flying out of both SFO and LAX on non asia flights. We should be seeing them on the Australia runs very soon.

UA is smart to upgrade their premium product quality, and add coach seats at the same time. 374 pax is a nice heavy load for a 744.

I'm furloughed on the 31st of this month and will loose all my United benefits. You can sure bet that I'll be on it. The 747-400 is the only aircraft in the United fleet that has eluded me. It'll be great to finally catch one.

So is this a recertification flight due to the reconfigured upper deck? A repositioning? If a repositioning, any ideas what flights (presumably international) will either follow or precede the domestic segment?
