Quoting Zeke (Thread starter): TV News at the moment is talking about an Adam Air 737 that has had a runway excursion at Batam near Singapore, any more news about it ?
Any word if the aircraft is a write-off or not? Hope all evacuated safely!
It is a B737-400. The plane landed in rain, skidded off the runway and damaged the right wing upon landing at Batam airport, an Indonesian island just 10 km south of Singapore. Adam Air is notorious for its poor safety record. In January 2007, an Adam Air B737 crashed into the Sulawesi Sea and all 102 on board perished.
Aircraft rumoured to be a write off, the wing root has been compromised, partly or mainly due to the collapsed landing gear hitting it... but that's still a rumour
PK-KKT... 734 (leased from CIT) Unconfirmed but it was reported by "witnesses" that, Weather was after a rainshower, wet runway, steady slight crosswind, no gusts or windshear reported by previous 3 aircraft (a Merpati, Batavia Air and Indonesia Air Asia 737s).
Aircraft reported to have tried to land 2x and went around...
On 3rd attempt, aircraft bounced 3x, afterwhich right main landing gear collapsed causing aircraft to exit the runway. Landing gear jammed below the inboard right handside flaps causing damage to it.
Quoting Kaitak (Reply 6): Have they started receiving A320s yet, or is that deal still on?
The deal was never on/confirmed as a firm order.
On the same day it was also reported that Adam Air is to cease operations soon. 14 pilots have applied en masse to another airline, the accounting has been "zeroed" / "whitewashed", and that 7 aircraft are grounded because lease non-payments.
This compounds allegations over the past few months that Adam Air has been facing grave difficulties in staying alive, with crew exodus continuing and return to the "old (lack of) safety culture.
Part Owner Bhakti Investama has said they will start up a new airline too, leaving the future of Adam Air in doubt.

This airline is a disgrace. They've had at least 3 accidents in the past year and one of them killed everyone on board....this is a sad excuse for an airline

My brother coordinates maintenance for Delta's overall operations, as well as for the other airlines they service, which includes Adam Air. He has the best stories of them, including one time when they called to "negotiate" the price of an engine part that he had ordered for them. The price was right over $3000, and they called to say that the most they'd pay was $300. It's been on order since 2006 and they still refuse to pay it. They also refused to pay for a $16 part. We were just talking two days ago about when the next Adam Air incident would occur. Great timing.

So which is the best airline to bet on in Indonesia then, both in terms of a passenger and in terms of an investor? A toss up between Lion Air and Mandala perhaps? Or even Garuda?

Perhaps Adam Air is to cease ops soon...
The airline isn't accepting any bookings after 16th March...
Tried to make booking on 17th March couldn't get anything, but 17th April still got some seats...
Called the reservations center... "We're not flying after 16th March"...

FR might be many things, but the one thing they always live by is the theory that safety might be expensive but an accident is far, far, far more expensive. This seems not to be the case in Indonesia at the moment. Adam have written off 3 (or is it 4) frames in less than 6 months. Who the hell is insuring these people, or is it a case of "brown envelopes"?
Brian.
Next flights: MAN-ORK-LHR(EI)-MAN(BD); MAN-LHR(BD)-ORK (EI); DUB-ZRH-LAX (LX) LAX-YYZ (AC) YYZ-YHZ-LHR(AC)-DUB(BD)

6 frames in less than 6 months? Which ones?
The ones I recall off from my head (subject to omissions and errors) are:
MAR08: PK-KKT, Batam, RMLG collapsed on landing. (potential W/O)
MAR07: PK-KKV, Surabaya, hard landing, fuselage severely bent (W/O)
JAN07: PK-KKW, off Makassar, current most probable cause is IRS/U failure with A/P engaged resulting in loss of orientation and attitude control leading to high speed impact with water.

How do you run off a 4000m runway with reversers is beyond me... the location of the aircraft is not off the end of the runway.
Quoting BrianDromey (Reply 17): Who the hell is insuring these people, or is it a case of "brown envelopes"?
That's the same question we have over here... who the hell is putting up the insurance? Especially the case of -KKV... we "know" it wasn't windshear... just an unstable approach with a belly flop...

17-18MAR = "FULL"
19-21MAR = few flights only
22MAR = all but 1 flight available
23MAR = "FULL"
24MAR onwards = looks normal, several flights "available" but all on the lowest classes
It looks like a severely reduced schedule.
looking at SUB, yes, seems that "all is full", but the return portions are all Q and Y class (lowest and highest)... In the past, when these occur, we assume (mostly rightly) no-op...
Medan is funnier, all full until 24th... but then, the availability pattern in terms of subclasses are identical until 29th...
But all this makes me wonder, what were the guys in the call center playing at by saying "we're not taking bookings after 16th...

Very true. My brother was told to be less vocal about Adam's maintenance quality, and that certainly was not from a person low on the totem pole. The pilots certainly want to fly safe aircraft, and the majority of the problem is with the small minority of the people at the top.
Quite true. I've also heard tales of them wrapping binder wire around a pencil to make a spring, but I certainly can't vouch for that, and it seems pretty far out there.

I dunno whether thats true or not, and yes, it seems pretty far out, but knowing Adam Air, it wouldn't surprise me. They've done some really crazy/stupid things in terms of maintenance so far... yes, thanks to the small minority at the top.
Those that do care about safety have left, some were sued by Adam Air for leaving, some got off without any strings attached... those in operations who are left behind are either those who don't care about safety, can't leave without punitive lawsuits, those who want to try and turn the company to be a safe one, don't know what safety is, or don't know enough about safety.
Some of the stories from my friends who left the company are way out of this world...

There are those low on the totem pole who'd "tell people not to talk" so they can save their own butts or because they want to suck up for a promotion... and there are those idiots who do so because they haven't got a clue.
Have a search on Adam Air on say, 2006... *grin*

I'll certainly believe you. Money creates stupidity sometimes, but it's hard for me to put myself into such a different mindset. Thanks for the info about how it got to be this way.
