Qatar Airways raises stakes in all-premium race
Monday March 10, 2008

Qatar Airways plans to start all-premium flights out of Doha on medium-haul routes, CEO Akbar Al Baker told ATWOnline at last week's ITB tourism fair in Berlin, and aircraft configured with an all-first-class cabin should be operating by year end.

Al Baker declined to reveal the type of aircraft or how many will be used on the new service. "We are looking for a 100-seat aircraft. I guess within six months time we will make the decision on which type of aircraft we will order," he said. He anticipates a demand for up to 20 regional aircraft serving at least 10 destinations in the Middle East. It is unclear whether QR is shopping at Bombardier, Embraer or both.

Its not possible to have an Embaraer or Bombaier with 100 all-premium configuration.

However, perhaps QR could use its A319CJ on these routes to premium destinations.

Some destinations that come to mind: Dubai, Jeddah, Cairo, Beirut...

Covering 10 destinations with one aircraft is not really offering premium service.......

My guess would be either Airbus or Embraer.  Smile

In my opinion, medium haul would be more high value destinations in Europe vs destinations in the middle east as flight times are just too short.

Cheers,

Doha to Dubai is a mere 230 NM - no way to justify a premium flight on such a short trip..
Beirut,Jeddah,Cairo,Amman ,Tehran,Damascus,Alexandria and even Istanbul would make sense.Even Mumbai..

I think this makes perfect sense actually. Their Premium lounge and adjoined services at DOH is very nice and the idea would be to just have a bus waiting outside the entrance to the lounge for the hop across the tarmac to the plane. The idea is that they would offer 20 minute check in, and that the plane would be parked right up by the terminal and not over on the other side of the runway (DOH has no actual jetbridges) which can take an eternity to get to - You could roll up to the terminal and be in the air half an hour later. They have separate immigration and passport/security facilities in the premium lounge and I can imagine it would be slick as anything - good idea.

100 seat Embraers (ERJ175LR) would actually likely only seat 35-odd premium class pax. They would carry no cargo on the routes, and probably offer a similar product to their current C Class offering on the A340.

The idea would be to check in the pax in the premium lounge and let them sit there - no need to mingle with the great unwashed economy pax at all.

I can see them looking at JED, DEL, BOM, CAI, KHI, and AMM as well in all likelihood. MCT, KWI, DXB and AUH may be too close, BAH definitely is, but then the flight still saves time and effort over the existing ones, so maybe they will look at it, I'm not sure. As an outside bet I can see them looking at THR and IST as well, and maybe even Moscow (is it SVO or DME they serve, I cant remember). All are very high yielding destinations from my experience.

Bear in mind an ACJ would have the range to do LHR/LGW, FRA, CDG, BKK, SIN, and KUL as well if they wanted to go medium/long haul all biz, whereas I dont think an ERJ can do it.

What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

They might be able to fit 90 seats into an E195 in a 1+2 config...?

Hmmm - would carry an almighty range penalty though. 90 of those premium class seats would be incredibly heavy.

I think 30-40 is more realistic.

I was thinking about the premium seats that Air Canada have in their E190s... they can't be overly heavy...?

Why would they use a lesser product though? Surely to be competitive they would have to use the same hard product as their mainline fleet, or better? I understand the time saving involved but the product has to be at least as good as the mainline fleet surely?

The article is a little unclear. Is there going to be a a series of premium truly "medium range" routes complemented by premium intra-gulf service or is intra-gulf service itself their notion of medium range? Anyone in the know or will I have to wait till my sister gets back to Doha tonight for any info.

Depends how you define medium haul really-I don't think anyone could say DXB would be medium haul from DOH, or BAH, or indeed many of the middle eastern destinations being mooted. I always thought medium haul was around 3 hours plus? Personally I think it could well involve IST and CAI, perhaps a couple of Saudi destinations, but my first thought when I saw the thread title was LHR/FRA/CDG, which at about 6 hours is at the upper end of medium haul?

The article does state middle eastern destinations as the object of the exercise though, so I'm probably wrong, but if they are going to run 319CJs around in an all premium set up, I would think there must be a market for them to run LHR/FRA/CDG aswell.
