The Merger of CityJet & VLM

Was just looking something up on the OFT website for work and noticed the following:

Parties: Completed acquisition by CityJet Ltd (part of the Air France - KLM Group) of VLM Airlines N.V. - issued 25/02/2008
Affected sector: Air transport activities
Case officer: Marie Didierlaurent 020 7211 8427 Email marie.didierlaurent@oft.gsi.gov.uk
Deadline for comment: 7 March 2008

The deadline for comments passed last Friday, so hopefully a final rulling soon. ALso it says VLM is being acquired by CityJet. Which leads me to think that VLM will be branded CityJet and eventually integrated. This would probably be more logical than merging it into KLC just because they both operate F50's.

I fully expect that the combined operation will be merged into one brand. Whether that will be CityJet, VLM or another brand remains to be seen. VLM is the nicer of the two brands but CityJet is a more logical name for the operation.

No doubt AF will want their name to be part of the future brand, as with Cityjet by Air France currently

Seems like VLM will become cityJet, and CityJet will become a new KL carrier.

As expected for many years, CityJet starts flying for KLcityhopper soon, on weekend flights to Eindhoven - hence many of WX's aircraft dont even mention Airfrance on them.

It is expected that WX will then commence services from AMS to cities in the UK and Ireland using the KL code (Dublin for example could be served x6 daily - replacing the EI codeshare)

On some routes - yes, in the same way WX replaced AF on routes.

So would this result in all planes in the expanded CityJet fleet flying in KL colours? What about the CDG feeder routes for AF?

It will be a shame to loose the VLM name. They have such a strong brand. And they are reasonable. I hope the VLM routes don't go the same way as the DUB Cityjet route, with it's very high fares.

I think this was anticipated quite early on in the takeover by AF/KL of VLM. Ultimately, I think there will be a single brand, which will be Cityjet.

Although Cityjet recently acquired RJ85s, the combined WX/VG could do with a single type; the 146/RJ85 just doesn't cut it. As a 6-abreast aircraft, it just - as the Americans might say - sucks. KLM is soon to take delivery of Embraer 190s and I can see Embraers coming into the WX/VG fleet at some stage, with the 170 being used for LCY operations.

No - they will stay in CityJet colours. Hence the aircraft being painted this way.

6 abreast = profitable aircraft (low CASM)
5 abreast = dog (high CASM)

6 abreast enables a very comfortable 4 abreast business class product.

I'll miss this kind of site at LCY.

I guess KL will consolidate the F50's on LCY-AMS routes into larger planes.. sometimes VLM and KLM leave within minutes of each other.

This would allow for some F50 expansion on other routes... not that KL is short of F50's of it's own, which a larger number appear largely idle around AMS daily... there not over utilised.. but then they have a long life, are cheap to run and in the LCY case.. very profitable.

KLcityhopper operates 14 fokker 50s. Do they still have Denimair operating flights for them too?

The F50 is still a super aircraft. Perhaps we will see them in CityJet livery.

I'd rather it be the other way around.. KLM dump the city hopper name and use the VLM name instead

VLM's brand will soon be a distant memory and will be rebranded ASAP under the WX banner. CityJet is a regional affiliate of AF and therefore by all means considered as being part of Skyteam.
