With all the international destinations being added out of FLL, what domestic cities do you see being added out of FLL and what airlines given the recent cutbacks from some of the legacies.....

Few, if any in my opinion. I think most in the industry (even the LCC's) are concluding that domestic leisure routes (ie - most of Florida) aren't the smartest expansion opportunities right now. I personally think FLL has perhaps a bit more domestic flying out if it right now than the market really needs, and LCC's lower fares are what have been stimulating enough traffic to fill the flights (ie - Spirit). Anyone that keeps fares that low is probably going to fare poorly in the year ahead, so I think you'll see demand soften as fares rise.

Bottomline, for any US household, vacations will be quite expensive in 2008. Disney just quoted me $85 bucks to get into a park in Orlando for ONE DAY per person (not including the $9 Starbucks I must buy once inside the gate)! Wow. Families will struggle to afford many leisure trips this year, and I fear Florida will suffer as a result moreso than other areas of the country. With MIA 20 miles south and PBI 40 miles north, there's alot fo domestic capacity already sitting on the southeastern FL coast. But the brighter side is that Europeans and Asians are flocking into Florida, California, Nevada and Arizona, loaded to the gills with cash given the dollar's state of woe, and that will hopefully offset the decline in American's travel spending in these regions.

We'll see what happens!

It seems most of the East Coast and Southwest are pretty much covered going into FLL.. you might see some more mid-west expansion, although airlines seem to be cutting more routes than adding at this point (see DL). Also you have to worry about terminal usage in FLL. NK has pretty much maxed out the H gates forcing them to use 2 or 3 F gates (which by the way is a pain in the a** for connecting). Until fuel drops some, I think you'll probably see Florida domestic travel stay kind of stagnant since the majority is low yield, especially on the legacies.

nk319, how you enjoying working the ramp down there??

FLL domestic... not much to expend... MIA to the south and PBI and MCO to the North... Alomst every NE cities got services to FLL... as far as west coast... adding some mostly unlikely...

I too don't see new markets being added to FLL for now. If anything, I do see Spirit perhaps increasing frequency on some of its already existing domestic routes.

FLL seriously needs more expansion and another runaway. There is just WAY too much traffic congesting that airport.

The one airline I do see adding new domestic routes later this year or next is AA out of MIA. I've seen rumous about AUS and SAN having nonstops to MIA, but nothing yet. The latest AA has added to MIA so far is SRQ, SAV, TLH and PHX.

I can't speak for PBI, don't know how much demand there would be to add flights to this particular airport in S. Florida.

I still dont understand this gate issue fully? Spirit has 10 gates in terminal 4 and they also use 2 gates in term 3. They currently have around 50 flights so how is it everyone is saying Spirit is maxed out in FLL?

Quoting Nk319 (Reply 5):

because we bank everything out of FLL... so why we only have baout 50 flights... 12-14 will happen at about the same time.. however, we have started adding off-peak flight such as SAT and ISP... but that then limits your connecting opportunities from those cities.

FLL is very well served domestically nowadays. It's only major gaps are Kansas City, Norfolk, Seattle, Louisville, and San Diego, IMO (and MIA has non-stops to all of those except for SAN). It has added a significant portfolio of destinations lately, such as, finally, Austin, Buffalo, Manchester, and San Antonio.

With the recent Delta cuts, FLL will even have non-stops to places that even MCO doesn't - such as Columbia, S.C. and Greensboro.

FLL could use WN N/S to BHM.
