Hey ya'll, I have a couple questions/concerns about NW operations during the Winter months here in ANC. All times I am going to give are approximations, so don't flame me for giving any bad times.
First of all....this winter NW has been flying up here 2 times a day. Both with 757's, I am thinking both are 753's, but can't confirm that. Anyway, one plane departs at 9am. One comes in around 3pm. One flight comes in around 745pm and departs at 945pm.
I was picking up my family from the gate(I have access to the gate because I have an airport badge). Their flight was almost 2 hours late departing MSP, when I arrived to the gate there were people waiting on this aircraft to leave. I did not see any crew depart off this aircraft when they arrived in ANC, nor did I see any crew that was getting ready to depart on the 945pm flight out of here. So here are my questions.
If both of NW's flights are doing the ANC-MSP run(which they are) is it normal for one aircraft to park at 3pm and overnight until 9am the next morning while the plane that arrives at 745pm, departs 2 hours later? I don't know why, but to me this doesn't make sense.
Also, can the crew of these flights really do a MSP-ANC-MSP run without going over their limits? If I am not mistaken, ANC-MSP and MSP-ANC usually has about a 5hr30min flight time.
Another concern of mine is this, since my families plane departed MSP and arrived in ANC late, why did they not try and get the passengers waiting to leave out on the aircraft that was sitting there? If it were any later, would they have taken the other aircraft? Or would they have made the passengers wait for the late aircraft?

I can not speak to what it is now, but I once did a mileage run TPA>ANC and the 7:45 plane from MSP turned around and went back. Different crew. Did not see any other planes at the gates at that time which was one hour behind schedule. Looked for ANCFlyer. But, found the grizzly bear instead. Got my picture taken with Grizzly instead (the bear.)
They're 752's. In the summer, MSP-ANC is bumped up to 3 or 4(can't keep track of MSP patterns) flights, and goes to 753's. Service to Anchorage is also supplemented with the seasonalDTW-ANC flight which is a 752

We can and do in the summer months. They're called High Density Turns, and are very very senior. We can't do it in the winter months because the flight aren't timed for it to be possible

Currently NW843 is a B752(W) and arrives at 1430. It RON's and makes up NW846 and departs at 0855. (This a/c last winter would do a run to Hawaii with stops in OGG and HNL. It would depart about 1600 and arrive back in ANC about 0700. This was discontinued with AS' service to HNL.)
Through the winter from about October to May NW will add the evening flight. NW 845 arrives at 2000 and departs as NW 844 at 2142 or there about. This is currently a B753.
During the summer months they increase service to five flights a day with four to MSP and one to DTW. They also add two flights from MSP to FAI.
I agree that the RON a/c doesn't seem to make sense but my understanding is that it has been successful for many years so there is no "need" to change. Once and awhile if NW845 goes MX they will swap a/c in ANC so that 844 goes out on-time.
