727's Parked At Kden

Does anyone know why there are two 727s parked at KDEN near the Continental hangar on the north part of the airport? One is a blank white 727 and the other is in Fedex colors. They've been there for a long time.

On a side note, does Continental utilize that hanger at all? I've never seen anything towed or parked over there.

The white 727 is a donated aircraft that has been sitting there for a very long time. It doesn't have a legitimate registration (I think it is DIA2000 or something). It is used sometimes for disaster drills. I'm still trying to ID this aircraft as none of the censuses I see show anything stored at Denver Int'l.

The FedEX 727 showed up some time last summer or possibly early fall. I assume too that it is another donation to the airport. I haven't been able to get close enough on any of my flights to/from DEN to get a reg. The one flight I was on a few weeks ago that taxiied by it I was on the wrong side of the plane to see the FedEx reg.

The white one is reg'd with a funky tail number but I can't remember what it is at the moment. The Fed-Ex has been there for over a year and was given to the airport for training and drills. Just a few weeks ago the police department's bomb disposal unit was practicing on the white one simulating a suspicious package removal from under a seat in the passenger area.

CO doesn't use the hangar at all. It was built for them when DEN was under construction. When CO moved it's hub from DEN the hangar was left vacant until F9 leased it to maintain their own fleet.

Now that F9 is building a maintenance facility at COS and will be transferring their staff there I wonder if the lease will revert back to CO or if F9 will continue to use it occasionally. Or perhaps WN can utilize for their growing presence at DEN.

On your deathbed you'll receive total consiousness- so I've got that going for me.

F9 leased space at the CO hangar, now that that lease is over CO is beefing up their maintenance base at Denver. They are hiring more mechanics and will bring the maintenace facility up to full speed, lots of 737s coming on board that need maintenance.

The all-white 727 is a former United 727-200. It has been there since ~ October 2001 when United quickly retired the last of their 727 immediately following 9/11.

I can't remember the full story, but I believe the aircraft was damaged and it was cost-prohibitive to repair the aircraft to get it airworthy enough just to go park in the desert.

The aircraft was donated to the airport and remained in UA colors for another year or two before being painted all-white. They used the aircraft for ground handling training, deicing training, law enforcement practice, and disaster training.

I asked this question back in 2002 when I first saw it there. I believe they know what the registration of this aircraft was at the time:

Maybe not... From the Rocky Mountain News 2/14/08

Frontier might stay in it's DIA hangar

Quoting RMN:
Continental has moved more maintenance workers to the hangar during the past year. The carrier did not say where those employees might move should it sell the hangar

Looks like CO might sell the hangar to DIA, who would lease it back to F9. F9 is still going ahead with the COS hangar for heavy MX while line MX will be handled at the hangar at DEN.

Quoting RMN:
Under one proposal, Continental would sell the hangar to DIA, which then would lease the building to Frontier. The move would not affect Frontier's plans to build a separate hangar in Colorado Springs for heavy maintenance, which involves major repairs and comprehensive checks, company spokesman Joe Hodas said.

Actually Continental uses the Hangar on a daily basis as it has since DIA opened. The hangar has never been vacant in any way shape or form. In fact Continental performed F9s mx for several years. CO has always held the lease and rented space to F9. At this point F9 only has a thirty day lease. F9 is on a month to month basis and has had trouble paying on time recently. The hangar plan for COS and DIA are very vauge at this point and may never happen.

I flew into DEN in August 2007, and both 727's appeared to be there.

BTW, there is a FedEx 727 sitting at DFW Airport just west of 36L and south of Cathay Pacific Cargo building. I think it has been there for a while too.

I know from personal experience that there was at one time a pilot side emergency crew ox mask and a v-speed chart on the United 727, but now they are gone and have been for years. Something happened to them, they are just gone, so don't ask any questions.

It also smells like mold and glycol on the inside. Funky!
