Porter Q400 @ PWK (Chicago Executive)

Just noticed that there was a departure from YTZ this morning to PWK in Chicago - PD8324.

Anyone have any idea as to why it would be going there?

What facilities exist at PWK? Would the field be capable of handling regular flights from YTZ (i.e. do they have customs facilities and so on...)? Could this be PD trying to find a suitable airport in Chicago to fly to or is it completely unrelated to Porter?

Anyone?

I remember when PWK was just called Palwaukee and was just a general aviation field. I'm sure it has expanded since then, especially since Meigs field was closed down.

Did you see this flight? Looks like Porter doing a demo flight or test flight out of PWK:

http://www.palwaukee.org says they have customs available.

PWK is third busiest airport in Chicago area behind ORD and MDW with apx 200,000 t/o & landings annually.

How does it rate with Rockford then? Is it 200k t/o and landing because it is mainly GA?

TheAirDB says that it's "available for a short time" in the system. That tells me it's some sort of demo.

Enough to handle up to 70 passengers arriving at once a few times a day?  Wink

I suppose it could be another Bombardier test/demo flight - similar to the one involving a Horizon Q400 (which was discussed some time ago).

If Meigs Field was still open, would Porter look into flying there?

The AirDB site also shows Porter flying YTZ-MYR and YOW-MYR.

For all we know these flights could be charters? Maybe Robert Deluce is working on flights to and from MDW or ORD?

I work in the shadows of PWK. If I would've know this earlier, I would've brought my camera. I used to take my lessons out of PWK, great GA airport with a lot of bizjets.

The MYR flight from YOW is tomorrow (Tuesday) I believe. Charter flight, with a return at the weekend some time.

The return should be interesting, as Porter doesn't often handle transborder flights (i.e. those requiring customs services) at YOW. I wonder if they'll use Gate 14 at YOW (in the domestic terminal, with a connection to customs) or if they'll have to use a gate in the US part of the terminal. The outbound will be even more interesting if the passengers go through US Customs in YOW. lol

Absolutely not. It's probably a demo for UA. It's not the first time a Q400 has been at PWK.

It was there for a demo, I emailed the airport and asked.  Smile They didn't say what the demo was for, but it was for a demo. I do not think Porter had anything to do with it, I think Bombardier was just using it for the demo.

That was not the reason why I emailed them, I emailed them asking if I could take pictures around the airport and they replied back with directions to a good viewing spot and also answered my question about the DH8D.

Off of the Palatine frontage road or somewhere else?

Wouldn't it be a demo for Skywest, Shuttle America, Mesa, GoJet, etc, and/or does UAL need to give it's stamp of approval before allowing a new a/c type into the UAX system?

Arguably yes, but Chicago probably wouldn't be the chosen venue for any of those carriers. If it was a demo for an air carrier, it was almost certainly for UA, who can then solicit bids from a regional carrier to operate them.

Yes, off of Palatine Rd, near Rwy30

As for the talk about service into PWK, It would've been nice to see activity of PWK, but I do not think that airport would be the right place, unless they are trying to target the business traveler that is going to the North Shore and Northern Suburbs area (like the area where I work...Discover, WalGreens, Takeda, Abbot Labs and all of the other major corporations out here).

Starting a new service to the Chicago area from YTZ will only add risk if Porter flies into an otherwise unused airport in the Chicago area. Porter will also lose any connection options for flights beyond Chicago. They should stick with ORD or perhaps better MDW.

There was also a Porter flight on Monday to EWR. 9000-series flight #. Route proving flight I guess.

Panam, TWA, Ansett, Eastern.......AC next? Might be good for Canada.
