WestJet has a new direct route in store for YEG, and that's to Hamilton, ON. This was in an ad in the Edmonton Journal yesterday. The flight is only once a week and it starts on March 17, 2001.

This makes me wonder if WJ might use the first of its new 737-700s (if it's delivered by that time) on that route.

Are there any more new routes by WJ besides Calgary-Comox and this one?

Samurai, probably a 732, as the 73Gs won't be delivered until May, and flown first in June.

Our two new markets and the additional schedule enhancements total a 14% increase in weekly departures, and reinforce our commitment to providing our low-fare service where we have seen increasing customer demand. The second phase of our expansion will accompany the acceptance of our initial four new generation Boeing 737-700 aircraft, scheduled for the second and third quarters of 2001. These new aircraft will make it possible for us to continue to add new destinations across Canada, ensuring that WestJet will always be the airline of choice for our value-conscious guests."

...and this was their January 22nd Media Release

WestJet Announces Service to Toronto's Pearson International Airport

CALGARY, Alberta. January 22, 2001. WestJet Airlines today announced its intentions to commence service to Toronto's Pearson International Airport in July 2001. The low-fare airline intends to offer service from Toronto to Calgary non-stop twice daily, with connections from Calgary to many of its other western cities.

Further details of WestJet's schedule and fares will be released in early February, pending the finalized discussions with the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA). However, the airline has confirmed that it will operate this route as a result of its acquisitions of the new generation Boeing 737-700 aircraft. Hamilton will continue to be the major Ontario hub on the WestJet network, providing connections east and west. The Toronto to Calgary non-stop service will commence as a connection only to its western route network.

Clive Beddoe, WestJet's President and Chief Executive Officer, said today that "The commencement of this new service to Toronto in July will coincide with the arrival of our first new generation Boeing 737-700 aircraft. These aircraft are designed to fly both short and long haul routes with increased fuel efficiency, speed and comfort. WestJet remains focused on the successful low cost, low-fare strategy of our mentor Southwest Airlines, who has evolved as a result of its new aircraft acquisitions by similarly expanding its stage length. The net results for Southwest were growing passenger volumes and a generation of record earnings.

"Today's announcement shows our continued adherence to this successful model. As we grow, these new aircraft will allow us to spread our wings across Canada and successfully operate a mix of short and long haul flights. This is an exciting time for WestJet, entering this new market, and taking the next steps along this proven path for success."

WestJet Airlines currently serves the 16 Canadian cities of Victoria, Vancouver, Abbotsford/Fraser Valley, Prince George, Kelowna, Calgary, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Hamilton, Ottawa and Moncton with a fleet of 22 Boeing 737-200 aircraft. WestJet will commence service to Comox on March 3 and will offer Limited Addition service to Brandon March 6 to May 31, 2001. WestJet is publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol WJA.

I haven't anything like YEG-YHM in the press release section, but the ad specifically stated a direct flight once a week from YEG to YHM.

However, I checked WJ's schedule - and there is a same-plane service from YEG to YHM. But there's one stop along the way, most likely in YYC or YWG, so it isn't exactly nonstop. At least the passengers won't have to worry about changing planes, anyways.

To sum it up, the ad seems to be a little misleading.

Non-stop means no stop en route. Direct means there is a stop, or stops, en route but no change-of-plane.
There's the rub!

And a very interesting rub it is, Polaris. Some people might not even know the difference between direct and nonstop flights. And this is in the age of hub-and-spoke system that many airlines operate on today (I know WJ doesn't really do that though, unless you consider YHM and YYC)

However, it's a good point for passengers to consider. Then again, what the hell - WJ's timetable does say whether you will have to change planes or not. I've seen timetables from other airlines fail to put in that kind of detail.
