Would also like to know more about that, especially to hear about a DC-8 coming this way. I wonder whose it was?

It was N865F of Murray Air, which is a DC-8-63CF originally operated by Overseas National. There is a suitably lurid report on the breakingnews.ie website:

"A US cargo plane made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport last night after its engines caught fire shortly after taking off.

The emergency services at Shannon were put on high alert after the crew of the Murray Air DC-8 reported engine problems with the aircraft at around 10.30pm.

The flight was en route from the US to the German city of Cologne, with a scheduled transit stop in Shannon.

Residents in nearby Askeaton say houses shook as the plane stalled overhead, with flames streaming from both engines.

The aircraft eventually landed safely at 10.45pm and a technical examination is now underway."

A second company aircraft is due to fly from the USA to SNN, presumably to take the cargo onwards. http://flightaware.com/live/flight/MUA902

Quoting Irish251 (Reply 2):

One strange modificiation to a DC-8 to only have two engines  Smile

Got to love such reports.

Yep, didn't know the DC-8 was modified with 2 engines. Must be some scientific experiment to reduce ozone levels.  cheerful

Anybody knows what city in the US it came from? Any other cities served by Murray Air DC8F? Thanks for the info.

What could be the reason for two engines catching fire? Would be interesting to know if they were both on the same side.
