DL Re-times MSY-LAX; "Upgrades" MSY-SLC

Just browsing through newly updated schedules, and I see that DL is changing up MSY-LAX (a good move, imo) and is slightly upgrading MSY-SLC.

Starting on 6/5, LAX-MSY goes from this schedule:

Dp. LAX: 1145a
Ar. MSY: 525p

To this schedule...

Dp. LAX: 745a
Ar. MSY: 135p

The return flight...instead of departing MSY at 615p (basically in direct competition with a UA/Ted departure around the same time) will now depart at 215p. The new times will provide the only early morning nonstop from LAX to MSY, as well as the only early afternoon nonstop from MSY to LAX. All flights are scheduled to be operated with a newly reconfigured B738 with PTV's at every seat. The bad news? The flight goes to 5x weekly from daily.

Also, MSY-SLC goes, yet again, from a CR7 to a CR9...not much of an upgrade, but at least the F cabin makes a return.

MSY-MCO...which was going to be cut to one flight flying 5x weekly, will still be cut to one flight; however, it will operate daily.

The CR9 has flown this route before, and was a better fit for the stage length, but it was needed it other markets.

Yeah, it has been going back and forth between CR7 and CR9 several times a year it seems. Hopefully, it'll stay CR9 (at least) for a while this time. Quite a downgrade from the old days when 727's, MD-90's, 757's, and the occasional 767 flew the route.

I flew a 757 roundtrip MSY-SLC-MSY in August, 2000.

Usually, from around 1997 through 2001, MSY-SLC saw 1 72S in the morning, and 1 757 (sometimes 767-200 for ski season) in the evening...was usually a 6:45pm-6:50pm departure. On the return, the 10:00am-ish flight was a 72S (operating SLC-MSY-TPA, flight #2076), and the evening 8:30pm flight was normally a 757.

Additionally...with the headwinds we encounter on that route, a CRJ7 just doesn't cut it. We run into pretty significant payload restrictions due to winds and stage length. Add alternate fuel and we are lucky to get out of there 3/4 full. A CRJ9 can do MSY-SLC with little to no weight restriction.

Now if only DL would rethink that CRJ9 on YYZ-SLC.

You know I was always wondering if the CR7 could do that one consistently without payload restrictions. I guess I know the answer now! Sort of reminds me how AC Jazz used to do MSY-YYZ with a CR2, and generally couldn't leave with more than 35 passengers per flight, sometimes less on a hot day.

I don't remember a 767 being scheduled; but the route was 72S + 752 for quite a while during the late 90s early 00s.

It wasn't usually a 767...but I had an old DL schedule which shows one operating the 645pm flight...it operated ATL-MSY-SLC. My uncle took it one time when he went skiing.

What I'd really like to see are the LAX and SLC flights go double-daily, so DL will have morning and evening arrival/departure options on both end out west.... really a big casualty of the loss of the DFW hub for us  Sad

Sure did...762 and 763, alternating with 757 depending on the month.

It was flight #485 ATL-MSY-LAS and fight #302 LAS-ATL-MSY.

That one started in '95 and lasted until DL pulled back in Vegas in the early 00's.

Looking at the schedule for June, I believe then SLC-YYZ will go back to an MD-90. I wish SLC-YVR would likewise go back to having a 738 as it did in 2006, 3x on CRJs (even though one is a CRJ7) just doesn't cut it for this route.

I guess it's holding its own, which is good to see.

Besides all of the DL cutbacks, I applaud them for adding a couple of old, classic DL routes from MSY recently, namely LAX and LGA.

Indeed.

They're still way down in comparison to the other Legacies here, mostly due to the loss of the 762As... well, except perhaps NW, but that airline didnt really amount much of anything here to begin with.

Yeah, NW is a shell of its former self in MSY...which says something since its former self wasn't too much to begin with!

At least DL is keeping the CRC open.  Wink

I'm all but shocked that AA doesn't have an Admirals Club here, considering that they're our largest Legacy and the number of destinations/frequencies they have from this area is one of (if not "the") highest for a Southern city outside one of their hub states.

To a lesser extent, also that CO doesn't have a Presidents Club, despite the Crown Room in D.

I thought at one point there were plans to open up one when they were on B. I guess they are content on having their members share the CRC, but you know they would probably have the customer base to operate one of their own successfully. Maybe one day...
