According to the numbers from the FORTUNE study, Northwest Airlines improved the most of all the major airlines in the U.S last year.

How the major airlines compare (followed by their overall score/last
year's score, and how much they improved/declined):
1. Southwest Airlines (7.62 / 6.95)= +.67
2. Continental Airlines (7.02 / 6.72)= +.30
3. Delta Air Lines (6.49 / 5.97) = +.52
4. AMR (6.22 / 6.01) = +.21
5. Northwest Airlines (5.36 / 4.59) =  Smile +.77  Smile
6. UAL (4.69 / 5.78) = -.82  Sad
7. Alaska Air Group (4.31 / 5.57)= -1.26  Sad
8. Trans World Airlines (3.38 / 3.56)= -.18
9. America West Holdings (3.29 / 4.03)= -.74
10. US Airways Group (3.22 / 3.82)= -.6

SO now let's put the list in order of MOST IMPROVED:

1. Northwest
2. Southwest
3. Delta
4. Continental
5. American
6. TWA
7. USAirways
8. America West
9. United
10.Alaska

I agree. It used to be where I wouldn't go near the *thought* of hopping on those red and gray jets. ...even if they paid ME to do so!. NW practically used to make Greyhound look like SQ's Raffles class on wheels.

Now, if only they'd fire those mean-ass broads who pretend to be "Customer Service Agents" at DTW & MSP, they'd really be alright.

Better customer service skills are definitely needed at NW's hub airports.

Wow, you're telling me Alaska was worse than UA last year? Hard to believe.

yes, NWA improved a lot, but if you take a look the absolute score, you will see that NWA had only 5.36 last year after improvement. NWA is still way behind many other American-based airlines. It is easier for NWA to raise its score since it wasn't an outstanding airline at all. For airlines that already scored high, it is harder for them to improve relatively.
However, I am really surprised that UAL dropped so much. It is now even behind NWA.

my two cents

Why UA had a horrible year last year.

Northwest is at 5.36 and I honestly think that is a little plow for what they deserve. Don't forget that the AQR rated NW as #4 for 1999 (up from #9 in 1998) so they clearly are getting better.

Could some PLEASE list the criteria that a survey uses before just blurting out results. It always bugs me when people say "X airline is best" or whatever, without explaining what basis they have for making that judgement.

Now, yes, I realize one can just go to Fortune's website, but I doubt many people will do that.

Have you guys noticed they ve been running full page adds in USA today almost everyday listing lowest fares, I think they are really trying hard to improve their image, now if only they could change that livery.

They are trying really hard and they do have a product worth showing off!!

The agents in DTW and MSP are friendly in my opinion.

My only comment is that NW could learn a thing or to in the advertising area. If they would advertise all the great things they do, their image would be even better.

Way to go NW....people are noticing the improvement!

I disagree with the rating of NW's innovativeness....

They have a lot of technology such as internet check-in
Eservice Centers
Auto upgrades for elite members
Rebooking cell phone banks that are wheelinto gate area when a flight gets cancelled
hand held checkin devices so gate agents can move around

and the list goes on....

I'm happy to see that NW has improved so much, continuing a trend from the low point of 1998 with the DTW fiasco and the pilot strike. It will be interesting to see what 2001 holds for NW, with a major rift between the airline and the mechanics. Let's hope for the best NW fans!

I was just thinking about how much this forum's opinion of NW has changed. I remember when all you had to do was put NW in the subject and you would get about 10 people wriitng hate posts. It's so great to see the opinion of NW rising among us airliners.net people and I know it is rising with the general public too.

If you are still an NW doubter and haven't flown them for a while, I urge you to give them a try. You'll like NW (almost as much as I do)

Does anyone know what the rankings of all the airlines internationally are? What are the best in the world and how AC measures up to them?

Regarding the best airlines in the world, the awards are usually spread around Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Virgin. I wouldn't be surprised to see British Airways back up there next year as they really seem to have got their act together this year.

I guess that in the scheme of things, CP aren't the best, but then again they aren't the worst either.

"When you are at the bottom of the heap, the only way to go is up. Let's see if they can stay there fat chance":

NW was towards the bottom of the heap for about 2 years around 1997/8.

However, they lead the major hub and spoke carriers in ontime performance for the decade 1990-1999.....they ran a very sound operation throughout most of the 1990s again with a slide in 1997,1998...but have since turned around and become one of the best again.

They have been running a great operation for 75 years.
So to you "wpr8e" I say fat chance they won't stay there.

You don't have to try hard to look for positives at NW, as many people have said on this forum in other posts, there are many posisitves.

Just be happy that they continue to make so much improvement rather than being so cynical.

#2 Ontime
#3 Luggage
#3 Complaints
#2 Involunatary Denied Boardings

Among the hub and spoke carriers is GREAT perfomance (overall I think only Delta was better with #4 ontime, #1 luggage, #1 IDB, #1 complaints)

To use all these indicators to rank who is most improved is a rubbish comparison.

TWA used to be right up there on bags, on time, etc. but they nearly went out of business.

I have flown many times, mostly international and NW is by far the worst airline I have ever flown. Well Egyptair was the worst so they are the second.

They might get you there on-time but if the cabin crew were rude, the $3,000 business class seat that you sat in was crap, the in-flight didn't work and the 800 pound flight attendent from Minny with a f-uped accent was a complete bitch the whole flight. If that is improvement that you can take it.

When NW wins ANY business class award, service award, best in-flight award, best frequent flier program, one of the best airlines/companies to work for in America, or Airline of the Year then come back on this forum.

Stop the NW lovefest
