Flights On Foreign Airlines In The US/codeshare

I am aware that you cannot be a revenue passenger on a foreign airline flying domestic US routes. But how do codeshares affect this?

For example, I want to fly Los Angeles to Honolulu. I buy my ticket on UA flight 10000, but this is actually a Air New Zealand flight that is codeshared with UA on its way to the south pacific. Can I fly just the LAX-HNL route as long as I have a UA ticket?

If you are just flying LAX-HNL on United, you would not be on an Air New Zealand Flight. You would only board the ANZ flight if you are continuing on to the Pacific. If you buy a ticket on United from LAX-HNL, you would be put on a United flight. Domestic code shares are used for connecting purposes ONLY. For example, an American Qantas codeshare flight from JFK to LAX is meant for connecting passengerrs in LAX who will board the Qantas flight to Sydney. You would NOT have a Qantas ticket if you are terminating in LAX.
