Do Airlines Believe Manufacturers Delivery Dates?

Pardon me if this has been discussed before, but with the delays to the A380 and now the 787 do airlines actually believe aircraft manufacturers delivery schedules? If yes, a second question arises of why? It has been shown time and again that the manufacturers don't know what they are talking about when giving timescales so surely any competent company would not believe them when making it's own plans for the future. I can see that it makes good commercial sense to say that they believe them; after all with the penalty clauses they either get cheap planes or nice fat chunks of cash. However for their own internal purposes - say at board level - surely they must assume that the aircraft won't be delivered on time or as advertised. Anything thing else would be just plain bad governance by the board of directors, wouldn't it?

For newly developed aircraft, not really. For in-production aircraft, yes.

1) They have to plan to something and they don't have anything else to go on
2) They know what their contract says

Tom.
