US Airlines To Cuba.

I read an article in the Chicago Tribune that said certain US airlines really fancy flying to Cuba. However, I find something quite strange to say the least about these airlines wishing to take on that route. Don't some US airlines already offer indirect flights....hint (codeshare agreements) to Cuba? Think about it. With some of these airlines offering codeshare flights and of course your passport not having to be stamped by the Cuban officials aren't they just trying to be a little cheeky here by what they are expressing? I know wanting to fly their own planes into Cuba would be the main aim here, but technically, aren't some US airlines already flying passengers to Cuba?

Tell you what, check the codeshares that Delta got, then you'll realize that it can and does happen. By the way I got a friend who used the "codeshare" system and had a great time in Cuba.

I am curious that only certain cities are authorized. If Castro shows heart trouble, everybody's going to be lining up to get into Havana...and Varadero...and the other resort towns...

Gulfstream has like 3 daily charters to Cuba and will sometimes wet lease a CO 737-300/800 for the route. Mexicana does an occasional 727 charter...

But it's easy to get to Havana. Take someone to Cancun or Nassau and they have tour packages for Havana from there... Hotel Nacional is probably the best place, although I remember the pool being ran down. I think it's the old Hilton. I also recommend Mi Cayito Beach which is about 20 mins E of havana.

American and Continental both fly daily MIA-HAV. However, the flights are not for anyone. They are basicly charters. You won't find them in the flight schedule at www.miami-airport.com, but you will find them when you check for Real-Time flight statuses.

I think AA even flys charters to Cuba out of JFK and CO does the same but out of EWR. There are pretty large Cuban citizens living in the NY area. The size is comparable to the Cuban pop around MIA.

I think when Havana opens up it will become a huge hub in that part of the world. It has a nice central location to the carribean from the US, Mexico and some of the islands. It has a nice long runway unlike some of the airports in Carribean.

Sanctions are crazy! They just ensure that an unpopular foreign leader stays in power, ensuring America has a few bad guys to posture with - Castro has been in power since Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton, Bush 2 and counting. Saddam since Bush 1, Clinton, Bush 2 and has a while to go yet, ditto Qadaffi. If there were no sanctions these useless people would never have retained their grip on power. (By 'useless people' I refer to the foreign despots - although most of the Presidents could fit into that category, that wasn't what I meant.) If America maintained full relations with these countries increased wealth from increased trade would give their populations more freedom, information and stronger opposition parties. It hurts American companies too, they'd make a mint in Cuba or the oil-producing nations. None of the countries America has picked are 'poor' by definition, in fact some were the richest in their region - Iran, Lebanon, Cuba, Libya all had (in some cases still have) living conditions comparable to most first world nations, at least for a big chunk of their population if not all.

Anyway, it's silly not to allow US carriers into Cuba, even sillier for US-based CRS' (ie Sabre) not to even have Havana loaded as a destination. Castro is barely even a threat to his own people, certainly not to anyone else.

BTW, didn't Miami Air run a quasi-scheduled service from (wait for it) Miami with 727-200s?

USAFHummer, I do not know what are the requirements for the the daiy CO/Gulfstream and AA MIA-HAV flights, but they are not listed on the flight schedule for either airline. The only reason I know of them is because MIA's website lists the flight on the real time flight status report. You might want to call either airline for more info. They are basiclly charter flights. Also, Vrigin340, the Cuban population in the NYC area might be large, but it in no way, shape, or form compares with Miami's Cuban population, quickly approaching 1,000,000 residents, or abour 1/4 of Miami's population.

The US flights to Cuba, Iraq, etc. have to be charters under US and UN sanctions laws. However, I wish they would open up...maybe then we could legally get Cubanas into the US, and maybe get a Baghdad-JFK Iraqi Airways flight...it would be nice...
