I was recently looking through some old timetables and noticed that in the early 1970s TWA operated a daily 747 flight between Las Vegas and Chicago. Did any other airline have 747 service to LAS during this period?

Also, did LAS have gates with a 747 jetbridge or did the passengers deplane via portable stairs?

nomadic :?)

United flew a 747 between ORD and LAS. IIRC, eastbound it was flight 218 that went LAS-ORD-CLE

I think one of my old 70's TWA timetables also had a JFK-LAS 747 service. It would make sense. One would have assumed AA took it there, but without looking through lots of boxes, I can't say for certain, I know it went into PHX. I do concur with the other posters that in addition to TW, DL and UA operated the 747 into LAS. DL I do believe from Love Field in addition to ATL.

You are correct. When DFW opened, the service moved there. DL's last 747 flight (in early 1977) operated LAS/DFW/ATL.

AA did not serve LAS until after deregulation, when they took over Frontier's dormant DFW-LAS authority. By 1978, AA was down to just 7 passenger 747s (the rest were converted into freighters and / or sold), and they were used almost exclusively on JFK-SJU and JFK-LAX. I don't think AA flew 747s into LAS on a scheduled basis.

Although it was primarily used out of PHX, for a brief period of time, HP used to run a 747 three times a week between LAS and HNL. It was parked somewhere on the B gates I believe.

Ah yes, thanks for the memory jog there. I know they took the 747 into DAL from both JFK and LAX. ORD-PHX too I believe. IIRC, someone in a post some time back said they used to ferry one of their 747's from JFK to BDL for RON since they had no space to park it at JFK. Don't know the validity of this however.

That is correct.
I saw an AC 747 land there once when we are on the taxiway awaiting takeoff. Don't know if it was scheduled service or a charter, but it was most definitely AC and most definitely a 747. This was mid to late 80's.

That must have been cool to take an HP 74 from PHX-LAS  Smile

what was the time span when Northwest operated NRT-LAS? i know they used the B742's.

also, i believe United flew the B744 ORD-LAS in 2000 as well. it was great watching the plane come floating in for landing.

Did Tower ever fly into Vegas? They would've brought the 747. More recent history, but lets not forget JL's short lived 744 service.

If they did, it was a bigger gamble for the passengers than anything they would find in a casino.

At least a year, maybe two, around 1999-2000. The timetable shows it nonstop both ways.

What's LAS-- maybe 2100 ft high? With a 14000+ ft runway? Doesn't sound ridiculous.

Those were charter lights. I don't think AC operated scheduled service to LAS until sometime in the mid to late 1990s.

Canadian Airlines also had many charter flights to LAS for tour operators. Canadian Holidays (livery on 737 below) was their in-house tour operation.

JL didn't fly non-stop LAS-NRT,they stopped in LAX first. I doubt a 742 with a meaningful cargo/pax/fuel load could do LAS-NRT in the Summer.I've seen VS' 744's use alot of runway to LGW.

Charter, but still a 747 in LAS

UA as late as 1999 with a 747 in LAS

Tower in LAS with some nice TZ L1011 tails and a tail from Royal Airlines of Canada in the background.

ANA in LAS, charter

You are correct, JL did fly into LAS non-stop from NRT IIRC.

NW flew LAS-NRT until sometime in late 2000, the economy and JL did that flight in.

Does this count for a 747 ? Old Slick Willy used to like to come into LAS alot when he ran the show, good friends with the Greenspuns, a prominent Las Vegas family.

Yes, UA operated the 747-400 to ORD, and a few runs to IAD from LAS. They also had a few 767-200's and 300's for a time. This was shortly after they were scaling back their DC-10's. I worked for UAL during those days, and it was awesome getting such a variety of aircraft. Last time I flew home, I saw all those TED planes at the gates. I was saddened by the sight. It was such a fun time in the mid 1990s', and Shuttle By United was doing LAX, SFO, and DEN. The rest were mainline flights. I still think Shuttle was more successful than TED. Our flights were always packed.

Yes, NW had a few visits by the 747. Mostly due to WX in LAX, but I remember a scheduled flight for awhile. It was a cool sight to see.

Yes, Tower did fly charters into LAS often. It was another rare sight, but sure cool to see. I have a photo of one landing on Runway 25. Must have been in the early 1990's.

Oh god yes, and it was a beautiful bird. I always awed at it when it took off over my house. I also remember the good old Dash 8's when HP operated them for awhile. Those were the good days!
