.....EgyptAir Chairman Atef Abdel Hamid said the carrier's effort to meet the requirements for Star Alliance membership is nearing conclusion and it expects to be ready for a Cairo joining ceremony scheduled for July.....

pretty impressive if they manage it , wasn't their acceptance only announced in December ?

Interesting to see a brand/livery is on its way soon - by the end of May; MS will also modernise its short haul fleet, getting rid of the 737-500s, older A320s and A321s.

Never flown MS, but I understand that they have improved considerably in recent years. Cairo is one of the largest cities in the Arab world and if MS could make this a hub, in the same way as EK has done with DXB, I am sure it could be very successful.

...if only they would allow alcoholic beverages on their flights..
( I used to fly often from Sydney to Cairo in older days with MS and they had drinks on board- otherwise the Aussie's would not take the plane..)

I don't see how Star benefits from this. Isn't MS primarily a point-to-point carrier, linking CAI with everywhere else?

In order to defend my former home-carrier somewhat,it should be noted that Cairo Airport will see a new terminal and a major lifting of the older ones has been underway for some time.MS will change strategy and try to appeal more transit business,which-based on the older and outdated terminals was not really a pleasant experience..
Arriving in the "international "terminal on a foreign carrier and continuing onto Egyptian domestic flights was a nightmare.
MS management has identified shortcomings and in conjunction with Cairo airport officials are addressing them.
At this stage they are not at par with carriers like Qatar or Etihad ,but i'd compare them to TK two years ago. They will improve because they have to -in front of the Golf-competition they at this stage still carry lot's of tourist business. But yields in C-class are vital for any airline- and that business is only accessible by changing the product.
That's why I say that they should offer alcoholic beverages ,because it's a requested standard feature in service on long-haul flights.

MS belonging to Star Aliance , ? not surprising they left ORY for CDG1 , like TK , a few days ago .
CDG1 is to be Star Aliance Terminal for PARIS .

I do hope they will keep theie 3 x A342 for a while !
