Yes, it is! Every saturday in Faro International Airport is IL62 day. Last Saturday I was there and I saw 2 IL62M in a 15 minutes space RA86510 and RA86130. Today once again at 11:15 here it comes IL62M RA86583 and 10 minutes latter RA86522! So you guys that want to still see this rare bird, please come in the next few weeks to Faro and you'll have a pleasant surprise.
By, by now!

Hello CV990!

Do you know where from do the Il-62Ms come? And what airline fly them? Is it Aeroflot bringing tourists?

Thanks and regards,

TP343, São Paulo, Brazil.

These Il-62's are from Aeroflot and Aviaenergo. They both come from Moscow Sheremetyevo and yes they bring russian tourists, every Saturdays of the Summer IATA season.

Over here, in Siberia, we have daily flight from Moscow by Aeroflot on IL-62M and IL-96-300, plus our region's airline tries to compete with Tu-154M... all I wanna say is I wish I got to see more of Airbuses or Boeings. (the last year's A-310-200 flight was cancelled due to low profits  (( ).

Hello friend!

we must swop a bit, I'll go to your place and you come to mine, we get here lots of Boeings and Airbus everyday, in the other hand I wouldn'd mind a look for a daily IL62 over there!

take care!

The IL-62 is a good-looking bird!
The 4 engines mounted at the rear - just like the VC-10 (any other aircarft type having this...?)
How many are still flying? Where? Operators?

Faro airport sounds like a great place to spend a few days spotting.

Do you two guys prefer Faro or Lisbon for spotting? Not just for variety, but for access and good vantage points etc.

I have not seen an IL62 at Heathrow for ages now, this maybe bad timing on my part though.

Best Regards.

Hi 707!

In my life I used to spend a lot of time visiting and spotting in Lisbon Airport! Lisbon is the place to see regular airlines like AF, SN, BA etc. etc. You also get some african and brazilian airlines! Besides that you have TWA / Continental flying their 757, and you can also see TAP fleet and their A319/320, A310-300, A340-300 and B. 737-300. Also you might see some portuguese charter airlines like SATA ( from Azores ) and L1011-500 from Air Zarco. Besides that you can always see some very rare cargo airplanes but you must be lucky! I moved 2 years ago to Faro, and at the beggining it was great for me, most of airlines I didn't even knew, but now I becoming aware how the thing goes! Monday its Holland day, you'll see many Martinair , Air Holland, Transavia etc. Tuesday its Scandinavian day, many Premiair, Blue Scandinavia, Finnair, Braatens, etc. Wednesday its German day, that is a very buzzy day with lots of german airlines, Hapag-Lloyd, Germania, Condor, LTU etc. etc. Thurday is British day but... you don't want to know that yes? Friday its a little bit of everything, Saturday its IL62 days and some mixture of all the others and Sunday the same too! So my advice is, if you have time to get both its would be great! Facilities to spot in Lisbon and Faro are excelent!
Have a great time!

Hello CV990

Thanks for the great reply. I like your international days description, that is very interesting to know.

I have never had the pleasure of visiting Portugal, but after reading your post I will make it my business to visit some day. The closest I came to Portugal was to visit Gibraltar many years ago.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my query.

Sincerely

B-707

CV990 said it all. I just want to add that Faro is one of the best airports in Europe to see charter airlines, but only in Summer. I'm not saying this because I live and was born here but because it's true.
Yesterday I went to Seville, Spain to spend the weekend plane spotting there but that airport is so weak that I was there only 1 hour. In all the Saturday they were expecting 18 arrivals, here in Faro on Saturdays we have about 110 arrivals. Then I went to Moron de la Frontera, south of Seville, wich is a military air base, and I saw more aircrafts than in Seville, F-18's, P-3 and C-212.
I don't know Lisbon as plane spotter but here in Faro you have a secondary road south of the runway and always paralell with it. You are about 150m from the runway and always with the sun behind you, good for photos.
I've meet some people from other coutries here and the last one was due to internet. There are plenty of photos from Faro here at Airliners.net.

Thanks Luis. As I said to CV990, your reply is very appreciated and makes me want to visit Portugal even more.

Faro does indeed sound like an excellent airport for spotting.

Regarding Seville. I have a friend who is going to Seville on Thursday to see the World Championships in Athletics. I bribed her into taking a few photos for me. She is not really into aviation, but she agreed. I guess I will not have much to look forward to then, with there being only 18 flight arrivals in one day.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Sincerely

B-707

B-707 since I don't have your email, I'll reply throw the forum. I bring with me a timetable from Seville and I can tell you week days are better than weekends there. On Thursday there are 31 arrivals scheduled from airlines such as Iberia, Air Europa, Spanair, LTU, Crossair, British Airways and Euralair. Most of these 31 flights are from Iberia. The airport has no terrace and photos only throw glasses. Outside I didn't find any good place, just some woman working on the road

She is arriving on the British Airways you mention.

My friend knows nothing about aviation, she said she would take photos until the film ran out. She does not know the difference between a 747 and a DC3. So I did not tell her to photo anything in particular. She is only doing it to shut me up, but I'am grateful to her anyway. As I'am to you Luis, thankyou again.

Take care
