New oneworld member elect to be unveiled today
A new member elect of oneworld is set to be unveiled today at a press conference hosted by the chief executives of all the alliance's member airlines in Los Angeles today. The press release will be posted on oneworld.com after the event, at midday local time, with full coverage in tomorrow's eworld news. The CEOs are in Los Angeles for the first meeting in 2008 of oneworld's Governing Board.
My guess is MX as they are the ones I have heard the most buzz on recently. But with oneworld you never know. They play things pretty close to the vest. RJ and MA were a surprise to me.

If the announcement is coming out of LA, then MX is a pretty good guess.

Well the announcement is going to be made in LA because that is where they are holding the ow governing board meeting so I would not read too much into the location of the announcement... but I still think it is going to be MX.

That was my first thought as well, and Mexicana would certainly make perfect sense. But, as others have said, it may actually have nothing to do with L.A. - as that is where the CEOs are meeting.
If not Mexicana, then my prediction is either Jet or China Eastern.
But who knows - it may be a total shocker that nobody expects - like Alaska/Horizon! (Dreaming, I know...)

3. Etihad
4. China Eastern
5. Jet

Quoting Ojas (Reply 4): was just waiting when 9W formally announces it's entry into oneworld!
It may be 9W. Anybodies guess at the moment.
My ranking in order of most likely...
1. MX - It is only a matter of time.
2. SN and/or 9W - What a nice ow hub BRU would be.
3. WS - A Canadian partner is badly needed.
4. AB - A German partner would be nice and AB wants to join and alliance.
5. G3 - Brazil is a gaping hole especially after JJ moved their codeshare from AA to UA.
6. Could be another total surprise....

Please let it be SN! Please!
It would make so much sense for so many reasons, one being that Skyteam is surrounding us with its European homebases and serving or planning to serve us connections by train via AMS and CDG. The other that FRA is the home of Star Alliance founder and heavyweight Lufthansa. Our local airline needs the support of a third alliance to compete better with the former two at its homebase in BRU.
And while we're at it, RJ could reopen the AMM-BRU route and I could use it to connect to BEY in AMM. And then there's what most Belgian aviation enthusiasts are dreaming of: CX opening HKG-BRU, JL opening NRT-BRU, 9W joining oneworld, SN expanding and renewing its fleet.
Oh, if it isn't SN this time I'm sure that it wouldn't be much longer down the road...
Yet, fingers crossed!
PS: Anyone knows if SN's CEO is out of office (to LA?) these few days...

What an embarrassing day for AA amongst its Oneworld peers! 500 cancellations on the day it is hosting a Oneworld alliance meeting in Los Angeles. I hope none of the AA execs were flying in from DFW today on an MD-80.

It is just a question of time when AB will join an alliance. The only thing we know for sure is it won´t be Star Alliance
It was rumored awhile that AB will start a partnership with an American carrier and most likely AA.
It will forever be a McDonnell Douglas MD 80 , Boeing MD 80 sounds so wrong

More information from the mexican press, it would seem as in fact Mexicana will be OneWorld's newest member.
From newspaper Excélsior and by (beloved by our fellow mexican a.netters) Darío Célis, in spanish: http://www.exonline.com.mx/diario/columna/183966
So we have now two reliable sources, especially the first I quoted earlier, pointing to Mexicana as joining OneWorld.
Quiting the first column in reply 6: "SEÑORAS Y SEÑORES la noticia es que hoy se oficializará la próxima incorporación de Mexicana que preside Gastón Azcárraga a la alianza global de aviación oneworld."
Translation: Ladies and Gentlemen, the news is that today the upcoming incorporation of Mexicana, lead by Astón Azcárraga, to the global aviation alliance OneWorld will be made official.

Welcome MX!
At MIA we already work very closely with MX through the current codeshare agreement. So this will be like a couple who has been living together for several years finally deciding to tie the knot.
OK... So now we can begin the who is next speculation w/out having to consider the most obvious choice anymore

So does this mean we can expect more flights/larger aircraft to serve DFW? Seems like a natural place to expand with the monster AA hub.
Now it makes sense to me. I was on JL12 about three weeks ago, NRT-YVR-MEX.
Of course this is a code shared flight, but I was wondering why the announcement was saying "code share flight with Mexicana xxx, and Aero Mexico xxx." I could understand one but why two of them from the same country. Well I have read the history of this route but I was suprised to hear MX in the code-share agreement now as I know it wasn't about one year ago when I took the exact same flight.

This may make a lot of sense also especially as OpenSkies is starting the JFK-BRU route shortly. I know EC wont be part of Oneworld but it will give them lots of options if any flights were to cancel

Quoting Cricket (Reply 15): but I think it is a matter of time before 9W joins oW
in that case you would have thought that they would have signed up with JL rather than NH a couple of days ago as their partner in Japan - I think they are planning to stay away from alliances for a while yet - they had had ( and in some case have dropped ) partners from all 3 alliances
Oneworld QF/AA and recently dropped BA 2 current 'relationships' with oneworld airlines
Star LH/OS/LX/NH/SA and recently dropped TG - have also added AC as a codeshare partner but not as a FF partner - 5 current FF relationships + 1 codeshare non FF relationship with *A airlines
Skyteam KL/NW/AF current FF relationships with 3 Skyteam airlines
9W are in fact slutting around with everyone - but of the 3 alliances oneworld has the fewest current links to 9W - so I am not sure why you think it is just a matter of time until they join oneworld
Moderation in all things ... including moderation ;-)
