Continential Airlines has announced that it is pulling service to Capital City Airport even though it wasn't supposed to start for a couple of weeks.

According to to a statement from Continental Airlines spokesperson Mary Clark "market conditions have chanced since September 2007 when we announced out intentions to serve Lansing. The dramatic increase in the cost of fuel fundamentally chances the economics of this route."

I would suspect based on this reasoning that a few more of the markets announced in the expansion will get the axe as well.

Lansing needs to find a way to get more service. I know, the proxy to DTW and FNT really hurts; but still, they should be able to land a new route, or carrier. It will help bring fares down and more people will be willing to travel though; helping the local economy.

So this looks like round 1 of the CLE expansion/contraction...

As a followup, who could have predicted that fuel costs would rise more, the economy to flatten more, or that LHR would suddenly open up with CO and other airlines paying hundreds of millions in cash for slots and the privilege of flying there.

There was service to CLE on B1900s operating as Continental Connection up until 2005 if I remember correctly. Tough call on the market with GRR, FNT, and DTW so close. NW holds well in LAN, DL does fine, and UA does okay as well. I'm pretty sure Allegiant does fine as well.

B4REAL, spelled like it sounds
