The DOT today selected United Airlines to back fill LAX-SJD authority vacated earlier this year by Frontier Airlines.

This route proceeding was contested by United, Delta and Virgin America.

United has 90 days to commence to service.

Took long enough. United should have gotten this the first time around.

Interesting, so who currently flies LAX-SJD?
AA, AM, MX, soon UA? Am I missing or adding anyone?

And Alaska.
I don't see them turning down service. They will do well on this route. They won't put TED on this route, will they?

Why should they? I haven't flown VX, but from what I've seen of their inflight product (website, other videos), they beat UA hands down.

While that statement is true, UA offers many more connecting opportunities than VX does so it isn't surprising.

Good for UA! I'm surprised they didn't fly this before. Hopefully VX will add SFO-SJD now that they can't add LAX. Yeah, yeah - I know that SFO is a much smaller market, but maybe it'll do well enough to work. Best of luck to all!

Absolutely. The connecting opportunities through LAX on UA/UAX should have been enough of a reason.

Yes. Twice daily during the summer, with single daily service remainder of year.

United had applied for the service few years back when it was given to Frontier which was proved to be an error as F9 neither had the LAX presence needed to market the flight successfully, nor connectivity across the West for feed.

While VX might have a neat product, the DOT right fully found United provides the greatest public benefit by proposing the most number of seats, and flights for the market, while offering the best connection opportunities via its LAX hub.

Aw, you mean poor VX got jobbed out of another route they should have rightfully had?  Wink

 checkmark

VX had no chance at this, IMHO. UA was the best choice.

I'm not a big fan of Virgin America, just wanted them to get it so the fares would drop. Anyway, congrats to United. Glad to hear its gonna be an Airbus, and not one of those freeking RJs.
