Was just on the phone to book a trip with KL but I used the AF elite line and while selecting my seat, the agent casually told me that "soon" AF was going to charge ppl who want to select an exit row seat. He said it was going to costr EUR 50 per leg on intercontinental flights.
He also mentionned that elite members wouldn't be charged anything.
Right now on AF I believe you can't book the exit row seats before check-in so i guess for elite members it is a plus, for other ppl it kinda s*cks.
I guess AF needs to squeeze more Euros out of its customers... maybe soon they'll charge for the second bag like all the US airlines...
If someone has more info, do not hesitate to share... and apologies if this has been discussed before, I haven't seen in in any search results.

The standard for EU airlines is 20 Kg (BA being the exception with 23Kg). It's not easy to split 20 kilos into 2 bags.

Virgin Atlantic have been doing this for a while now. When I needed a last minute flight with them last year, there were no upper class seats or premium economy seats. I therefore had to fly cattle. As I am 6ft 4in I asked them for an exit seat. They were going to charge me 30GBP for the priviledge, until they found out that I am a Gold Tier flying Club member - They then gave it to me for free!!! (NEVER AGAIN!!!!! next time, I will arrive late on Upper Class! What an experience that was in the back! the seat was narrower than FR Absolutely unbelievable, but that is another story!)
I do not think that it is such a bad idea, although there should be a sliding scale. Little tip for you all.....The window exit seat is a rip off. Never buy it. When the door is closed, the emergency slide on the 744 cuts off pretty much any extra leg room that you may think that you are going to have! No way should this cost the same as the isle seat. Other than that, I do not think that it is such a bad thing to charge for the extra space. In this current economic climate, I expect more and more carriers to do the same

Well, I am half happy...
First I have always expected them to let their elites get the good seats, at the moment they are just impossible to book. so that's good news, they are just 5 years late (in typical Air France fashion).
Second it sucks that they start nickel and diming passengers, luckily not the elites (yet...).

Quoting LipeGIG (Reply 6): a wide range of additional services
Which elites get for free, but could well cost $400-500 per flight!
Don't give ideas to airlines.
If instead they could offer premium economy, like Qantas, VS, BA, NZ ... (UA does not count as premium for me, barely "plus"), then I'd be happy to pay a bit more.

Quoting 57AZ (Reply 9): You forgot to add the $5 for each use of the lavatory.
Plus a nominal $5 disposal and restocking fee if you were to use a barf bag during the flight.

Today, most of the seats are reserved in advance by the GP travelers (non-rev). At check-in, I have never ever managed to get an exit row seat.
On one trip, I did Toulouse-Paris-Mauritius (I am Gold). In TLS, I try to get an exit row for CDG-MRU:
-Nope, sorry, they are all booked
(and check-in hadn't even opened in Paris).
In Paris, I ask one of the agents what is the deal with exit row seats. He admits that you can't get them if you're checking outside of Paris. I ask him if I would be better off if I was a non-rev. He smiles and nods.
So much for the "you can't book them in advance because we need to make sure you're fit to be in an exit seat."

Instead of complaining, just don't fly airlines that do this kind of thing. If enough people don't fly with these kinds of airlines - it'll put pressure on already difficult finances.
Next thing they could do is pay to open the window shades - booked to your credit card. Or pay to recline the seat. The sad thing is that some airline, somewhere around the world would be gullible enough to try it in their money grabbing rush.
Or better still, I just thought of it - an auction for exit row seats! Exit rows to the highest bidder. (no returns of money if you are ineligible.
