The President of the Autonomous Community of Madrid, Mrs. Esperanza Aguirre, had a meeting today in Dubai with Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Emirates Airlines.

According to the press release, Mrs. Aguirre anounced after the meeting that Emirates will probably start passenger flights to Madrid during the spring season of 2009.

EK does not have any services to Spain as of now. The major gulf carrier serving Spain is Qatar Airways.

I am sure Emirates can fill a plane from MAD, since Iberia don't seem to want to head east it must
be a winner for Emirates with all the connections they can offer from Dubai...

That is true, but is there a big demand for flight to Asia from Spain??

There is significant demand between Asia and Spain, especially India, Pakistan, China, Japan and there is also a sizeable Filipino population in Spain. Also, don't forget the connections from DXB to Australia and New Zealand.

Okay, but then I am pretty sure that we will see EK at MAD soon.

There is also the potential for EK to get feed out of LatAm. CCS, BOG and MEX to name a few places, could be EK feeders at MAD.
