Bonus Miles For Each Hour Delayed!

I was reading the "UA 747 Reliability Problems" thread and had an idea, based on my own experiences with AA A300 flying out of MIA.

Would be nice if there was some formula where for every hour of being stuck on the plane on the ground, the airlines would provide you with a pro-rated amount of additional miles in your frequent flyer account!

Example, MIA-JFK is 1100 miles (a little less) and takes 2.5 hours to fly up there. If you're stuck on the plane due to mx in MIA for 1 hour, which is 40% of the regular flight time, you get an additional 440 miles.

Of course this only benefits those enrolled in the airlines frequent flyer program, but it's an interesting idea (that will NEVER happen I know).

At the very least, airlines would either have an incentive to thoroughly check out the aircraft BEFORE they load us all onboard and if there is an mx delay, at least we poor passengers could sit out the delay in the terminal which is far more comfortable than a coach seat!

AA actually does often give bonus miles out for delays (often quite generous sums) -- check out flyertalk

While an interesting idea, I doubt they award you an additional hours worth of miles. Maybe 100 or so as a "Refund of lost time" to keep their loyal customers happy. (After all, this would only involve people who are members of the involved airline's FF program anyway)

What if it was weather related? I see your point, though.

You can check, double check and triple check, but something can always happen.

What if it was a quick fix? Is it worth all the trouble of deplaning, ensuring everybody stays in the gate area, getting people back on the plane, etc.?

Again, I see your point.

Air France recently gave me 2,000 Flying blue miles for a two hour delay. When an AF delay is the airlines fault (not weather, strike, ATC, etc) they give miles.

The world is really getting smaller these days

Wow, that's interesting. I'll have to research that a bit, as it seems I may be about to come into a HUGE amount of bonus miles!  Smile

Nah, not for weather issues, maybe just "mechanical" or "inbound aircraft delayed due to mechanical" (the second one, admittedly, is very difficult to prove).

Any additional checking before they herd us onto the plane would at least reduce some of these episodes. (Can you tell I've had more than my fair share?  Smile )

I leave that up to the judgement of the airline employees... just don't board us if, in your experience, the problem has a better than 50% chance of resulting in a delay of more than an hour.

That's nice - wish they were allowed to fly domestic USA routes!  Smile
