I was speaking to a Airbus rep the other day & he advised me that when Air Canada was trying to block the AA led team buyout of CP-Canadian, the Star Alliance team stepped in to help AC financially & that included United Airlines purchasing an A330 for AC. Now AC may well have paid UA for the aircraft by now, but it is interesting to see how partners work together (to achieve a common goal), to ensure (in this case) Canada remained firmly in the Star camp.

Interesting. I wonder if United will sell some US Airways A330s to Air Canada (or another partner) too once their take over is completed?

I think it was just a plan, and it never actually happened...but I do remember hearing about it....United was going to buy all 5 of them and lease them back to Air Canada....

Well, according to the rep, it happened & allowed Air Canada to free up some badly needed cash, assisting it to purchase Canadian.

Coventional wisdom would suggest United will dump the A330s. Although...does United still buy 767s? Delta still get the odd one from Seattle but have UA got any really young 767s? Because some of them are the oldest flying, 20 years old. So that whole medium twin fleet is up for replacement, and how locked-in to the 767 are UA? If the youngest aircraft in the fleet is 5 years old or more, the replacement issue is completely up for grabs. And I bet US Airways love the A330, and there'll be a sizeable faction from US that will be very supportive of the type. The UA camp like Airbus products anyway, so it could go either way. But I'd be very curious to know the average / youngest / oldest fleet age for UA's 767s.

According to JP, UAL has some very young 767-300ERs, and 2 more on order (04/01- N676UA and 11/01- N677UA)
and just to clear up the matter:

oldest 767-200 in the fleet is N601UA (cn21862/ln 2) delieved 04/83 making just shy of 18.

United is still getting 767s. I belive that that plane is leased to AirCanada. At least, that's what I've heard. Also, US Airways has mixed oppinions about the A330. I know that some of the flight attendants do not like it.

Please cite your source on this. I've heard only good things about the 330.

I also have heard many things. For example stories about people that claim having been hijacked by aliens, or about little green men, called Mulder and Scully that wear G.W.Bush masks and always try to sell washing machines to Saddam H. and D.Duck.  Big grin

I believe United had purchased 2 of them and was in the process of slowly selling them back to AC. It just gave the the cash they needed to take over CP. The A330 has never worn United colors, they just own them.

sources at United WHQ said it was only 3 Airbus A340's that the airline had owned and UAL Corp. then leased it back.

UAL Corp. uses it's pockets to help out everyone under the United Banner, be it United Airlines, Air Wisconsin, Great Lakes, etc.
