My father travels pretty often by aircraft and he told me that at night you have to close you passenger window (read: pull that little curtain over it so you don't get any light). But why is this, when it is dark you don't have to bother about sunlight do you???
So why can't you just leave these windows open?
BTW: I asked my father why this is but he didn't know and it doesn't care him at all, as long as there are windows in the aircraft he is satisfied

This kind of thing really pisses me off. But what really did was when I was on a SYD-LAX this past summer the sun was going down the f/a asked me to close my window shade. I did then reopened it but the damn f/a comes back and askes me to shut it again! I dont know why they can just let people keep them open if the want to so they can look out! Just because most people that dont care about flying do, doesnt mean that us aviation lovers cant leave the shades open!

Sometimes it's night on the plane, and lots of light outside. They want you to close it so people can sleep. And another reason is sometimes they show a movie, and they want it dark. Every time they do that when I cross the Pacific.

As above, people don't appreciate being woken up by the sunlight shining through the windows the next morning-apart from me, that is!
If you're desparate to see a tropical storm by night, or get a shot of the morning sunrise over the wing, then you can always go over to the door window (assuming there is one).
In my experience on BA longhauls, a few people always leave theirs open, and the crew don't seem to mind.

When I flew to Stockholm they asked us to close the shades late at night, I closed it 3/4 of the way but then put it up all the way soon after since I wasn't tierd and wasn't planning on sleeping. Plus the sun was rising on the other side of the plane anyways. The flight attendents noticed but never said anything to me.

On Hawaiian flight 4, the red eye from HNL to LAX, they don't bother asking for the window shades to be closed. This flight is 5 hours, and leaves at night and arrives in LAX just as the sun starts to rise.

I flew PHL-LHR at night once on US (B767-200ER), and the F/As never once asked me to close my window. Granted, I had it shut for the movie (Wing Commander, whoopee), but I opened it shortly afterwards- it's not often you get to fly over the Atlantic (at least, for me it isn't).

I've flown on Air France from IAH-CDG a few times. The flight leaves Houston at 4:30, and gets to Paris at 9:00AM the next day. I always keep my window open and look at the starts outside (I can't sleep on planes), and they never complain. On the return flight which is during daytime, we had to close our windows during the movie, but I left mine open and nobody cared.

Well when I flew many times, i always had my shades open, and close...... Close when watching a movie in daylights, and at night, it doesn't matter to me.

I have been on as many flights during the day as I have at night.
I have had the F/A dictate.... sorry.... ask that I lower my shades in respect for my fellow passengers to watch the Air Canada A320 tv screen during daylight hours.... "I politely informed him I would not" This is my seat and I will do as I wish! (He prabably went back to dream up some sort of air rage complaint against me!)
I have had F/A's "insist" that I close my shade at night, which I usually have no problem with except when there is a full moon in my window, but when I raise it early in the morning to get the sunrise, I have witnessed the scorn on the faces of F/A's when they see this.
I typically have something in my lap such as a book or magazine which sends a signal that I am using the outside light to read.
Too OO-VEG, I am rather confused in that you say your father is a "regular" traveler but he does not know why F/A's request blinds to be closed....????
That makes no sence to me!
Then again, I do not make it a habit to respond to any childrens topic on airliners.net.

On Hawaiian Airlines long haul flights, after takeoff when they start up the video projectors again, one of the first things that is asked in the prerecorded announcements is as follows:
"Now that we're airborne, we'd like to ask passengers seated next to the windows to kindly lower their window shades, so we can all see the picture a little better."
With the projection type screens on the DC-10 and other aircraft, I can see the difference in picture quality if even one window shade is up.

First of all, thanks everybody for your answers.
Dave T, My father ususally travelles inside Europe and never had to close his window there (those flights are not longer than 2 hours). But as he recently had to flew to Jakarta (on a KLM 747) he told me about closing the windows at night. He said he didn't mind closing it as it was dark and he couldn't see anything.
He also flew on some flights to America but most of those flights were at day and as he travells business class with his own PTV he didn't have to close his window at all.

I'm an aircraft lover, but I hate people who DON'T close the shades. Like others I want to sleep on a transatlantic flight, unlike most tourists, I have business meetings next morning in Europe
